You notice from time to time Registered Users listed at the bottom of the screen. Google [Bot] is in grey and has no user profile. Never posts afaik.

Then tonight noticed other similar format sites have Google [Bot] a well.

I've probably asked something really dumb but it's not the first time.
Ever think of googleing it

Google and other search engines browse websites that are on the internet.
They do so using bots or robots or spiders, whose job is to crawl every webpage on the internet, then index/sort and save that data.

When someone then goes onto google and searches for something, google is essentially trying to return the most relevant pages on the internet, relating to that search.

Imagine the internet is a book - say The Count of Monte Cristo. You are a Google[Bot] - ie you read this book.
Someone then asks you a question about the book; you scan through your recall of that book, and give them an answer.

Say the question is: "How does Dantes get his revenge"; you could give a list of answers, bankrupts one, gets another jailed, another gets himself killed...

Then extend it to an entire library, and the question becomes: "How does the hero get his revenge?"
All of a sudden there are a million and one possible answers, and too many books to read. So you employ low-paid immigrant workers who read the books for you. Think of Google[Bot]s or other search engine variants as low paid immigrant workers...
Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. I'm amphibious.
