Avatars can be moved back to the left with a little programming...
but I'm going to leave them on the right, as most folk are getting used to the new layout...
GArish? the old board always had a yellow bit at the top as well, maybe not so big though.

In the old system I was able to go to my last post in a thread and so pick it up from there. However I have found that if I use the "view unread posts" option then it works just as well. Thanks anyway!

FH, I think the new layout is perhaps better in this respect.
The way I do it is:
User Control Panel
Show your posts (all are shown)
Jump to post (on a per post basis)
PS, I only do it when I have an interest in a reply - otherwise why would I wish to do it.
