usernames/login

Post by fermain »

Unfortunately, an error has been discovered on the new upgraded board for members who have special characters in their username.
These members (for example with an apostrophe in their name) cannot login.
The only way to fix this is by closing down the messageboard, redesigning the database, and restoring the data.... so we're not going to do it.
If you are one of the affected users, the best (and most convenient way) to move forward is to register again.
We apologise for the inconvenience, and appreciate your understanding in this matter.

Mason’s metronomic boot played a massive part in Ulster’s European Cup win in 1999
The strange text in some old posts is caused by the same problem, looks like just ' is the real problem

Don't feel too bad about it GerryO'. I don't think they did it all just to exclude you.

It does not work in reverse however as a search for posts by GerryO’ does not work.

Guess Gerry* will have to suffice.

Can anyone explain it all?

Different encoding of database cables, causes the problem, similar to setting your keyboard for English US and some of the symbols change.
They should however be able to reregister as themselves again if they ask fermain to delete their old name, but they will then show as just having started back at first post.
By the way your post in here was the only one lost in the whole problem, plus a couple I made to see what was going on, unless you know different that is.
By the way you can search GerryO' posts as in all his posts

There you go. Only real post lost was one by me!

Does not suprise me really as it was already fairly obvious that the board was in transition. I was actually a little suprised that I could post at all at that time.

'fraid the GerryO' search does not work for me but no matter it was a TIC post anyway.

I wondered what you were on about actually cables as I did not notice that something was going on, we both finished with 2 post with the same database number by the way my one was a reply to a post by Neilf in View .....at the same time as yours here.
GerryO' is searchable by me I wonder is Gerry offline on holidays or is he unable to post

Cables,

As I recall, you were floating about in cyber space when we abandoned ship the last time. Was that the UR forum transition some time back.

Do you have an omni presence?

I believe I was the 'last man standing' on the occasion of the demise of the URSC MB.

There might be a reliable backup of that somewhere

The "apostrophe" issue doesn't seem to have affected me, but I suppose it was hardly likely to, as I only joined the forum two days ago.

It's good to have new posters. Do you know anything about rugby?
