La Rochelle Vs Ulster Sun 22/10/17 15.15 Sky Sports Action

Post by UlsterNo9 »

Our two away trips this season thus far have been an absolute shambles, crawled over the line against Treviso and comfortably beaten by Zebre.

La Rochelle will be a completely different animal to the Italians, this is a team that thumped a decent Clermont team at home by 51-20. I fear our manhoods will be ripped right off.

Fingers crossed the pack will be bolstered by Best, Henry, O'Connor and possibly Kane to lessen the shaming.

Can anyone think of any possible scenario whereby we can get anything from this game?

We will ship a hatful of tries up until their big lumps run out of steam, then run in a couple in the last 10 due to our superior fitness. Then Leslie will make some comment about our great attitude.

We are lazy cheating feckers. That'll give Rodders time to catch his breath.

Waits...

We need to play keep ball for as long as possible and not kick it away. Move them around from side to side and hope Charlie can magic a couple of clean breaks for tries. Ahh ffs who am I kidding....

Finished top of the league in the Top 14 last year and doing well this year, stuck over 50 points on Clermont 4 weeks ago and had a try bonus point away win at Harlequins last weekened. Yes they are a very good team.

Watched them play Racing last weekend - awful game of rugby - La Rochelle were poor and their ball handling worse than Ulster at their worst.

TBH honest I think Harlequins made them look good. With the right strategy they are beatable.

Not giving up hope yet :fleg:

Yes Rovi, I like that!

Any other theories on how we can possibly win this one more than a welcome read for myself.....

For myself La Rochelle play a very open free flowing game, we have proven we have the ability to score tries from broken play recently, La Rochelles style allows for high risk and with that errors, just maybe they could present us with the opportunities we need.

Gloucester beat them last season at Stade Marcel-Deflandre in the Challenge Cup semi final last year.

We are every bit as terrible as Gloucester are.

In terms of how we might win or a suitable game plan to achieve a win, we must consider the following:

They have a pretty sizeable pack. Our pack is somewhat lighter but quite mobile. Hendo/Treadwell make a pretty mobile second row. I'd have Kane on the bench over Rodders too. Get them moving around the park. Keep the ball in hand as much as possible. We have to play an expansive game.

What we must not do is, make copious handling errors or give away too many penalties. That will give them too many breaks in play and allow them to maximize their power with scrums and mauls. We should get them moving and test their cardio-vascular fitness. It's supposedly the edge we have over French teams.

Considering our away form, I hold little hope that we can play with a low enough error count to win.
