I enjoyed the match, and given the amount of new starts and fact that Dan just arrived a couple of weeks ago, thought we went well - against a strong Scarlets side.
He looked very rusty, but Marcel is some pup.. give him a game or two and I think he'll be tearing trees up. Live I didn't think Timoney had a great game, but watching it back he was excellent, and made at least one good poach on the floor.
I was impressed by our front rows, TOT was eye-catching while he was on, and I thought EOS was pretty good, but McBurney really stood out when he was on. He looks like he's put a bit of size on, and was a real livewire - I can see him putting a lot of pressure on by the end of the season..
Addison and Burns both good footballers, once they bed in properly I think we can threaten more. As for Henry, in full flight a thing of beauty... straight back, high knees, lovely to watch - also liked seeing him run across the pitch to celebrate turnovers / scrum pens etc with the pack. Kernohan was good too, has kind of come from nowhere..
Definitely promising IMO - I think with more time we should see the new guys gel in the backs, cut down the errors and provide more threat. And up front we have the makings of a very solid, if not world-beating, set piece platform, with a few class players to come back in.

Timoney is carrying on from where he left off last season with a string of great games. He is big, fast, clever and has a good engine. In the up-and-coming Irish backrow category he has probably overtaken Max Deegan and Jack O'Donohue, certainly the latter, who did not kick on at all last season. C. Doris (Leinster) is also one to keep an eye on.Columbo wrote:I enjoyed the match, and given the amount of new starts and fact that Dan just arrived a couple of weeks ago, thought we went well - against a strong Scarlets side.

Great article by Murray Kinsella in the42. Hopefully now that he has a full time gig on Premier Sports it will give him the financial freedom to continue doing these kinds of reviews. He's always right on the money.
Shame Cave didn't look to pass back inside rather than go for the pass to Speight which was knocked down. With Caves vision and decision making I'm surprised he didn't make the correct call.

JOD played more times than anyone for Munster last season and all across the back row.Spiffsson wrote:Timoney is carrying on from where he left off last season with a string of great games. His versatility may count against him but mashing his knee at the end of the season wouldn’t have helped.

If C Doris is any relation of M Doris then he certainly is well worth watchingSpiffsson wrote:Timoney is carrying on from where he left off last season with a string of great games. Anyone expect us to nail the most successful offloads in Round 1?

In truth Dan the Man has come at a good time not just for us but for him also... we have effectively been dragged down towards the bottom of the barrel over the past few years as appointments made 12 plus months in advance came back to haunt us.. it bought the coach an extra year if not two/three (one appointed but not here, two being his first and three he now had his own coaching ticket for the first time) before we all realised that the world wide search (not once but twice) which placed Kiss as the greatest living coach in world rugby was little more than another BS line from the under qualified and thankfully departed CEO.
Our expectations are low so dan starts from a good place.. we also lack funding to make the big purchases and anyway apart from Saffer farmers would they come.. There is however now an underbelly of young talented players that from what I understand think different to the many that went before... once many had been accepted into the Academy they thought they were Ulster Players then they set about playing 2-3 games over the next five years as they honed their skill in the weights room and without a ball in sight.. walking around the coffee shops in their track suits impressing no one.
Now the talent is there and it will be in the next 3-5 years that it really starts to comes thru and as such Dan the Man is very much in the right place at the right time.... he will be excused the odd mistake here and there even an average season or two as these youngsters start to come through and show promise... Lets be clear here before in 3-5 years time Dan is hailed as the new Fergie lets give credit to those that are the ones behind this current revolution going forward.. Big Willie and Campbell have in a short space of time turned the Academy around... although from what I understand a certain ex CEO claims that revolution is down to one man and one man only...
Dan also sees the value in developing the young players as they will further enhance his own reputation and he too can see himself in a better place going forward.. So win win as long as we don't expect miracles overnight and as she club takes a little time to rid itself of the rubbish and try to extracts itself from the now powerful grip in place by D4.

Sounds like a very fair summary of the current position Cockers. I hope the talent levels in the academy are not overstated as it is quite an exciting prospect but as you say, we armchair warriors need to temper expectations and not get our panties wet at the first sign of ability from a player. For example, young Kernohan on Saturday gave you instant thoughts of "he's good", butis he? Only time will tell us.
I am still expecting 3-5 years as the recovery time from the low of last season, advice from better-informed people makes me think it could be closer to 3 but we will wait, watch and in my case, hope I live long enough to see a really good Ulster team. The biggest factor to me is the realisation that we have spunked too much money on players who are not good enough, and in Charless's case on a player who was not what we needed and Kiss wasted, trying to make a winger/centre into a fullback, simultaneously wasting Ludik & Cave.
In passing may I say I hope Kiss dies soon, he was a stupid pig-headed wee ballix of a man who knew little but was convinced he knew everything, he ruined our team in three short years, aid and abetted by his troupe of clowns. I hate his incompetent guts. I dare say he was boosted in his feeling of omnipotence by that arch-clown Slogan who I also hope comes to a premature and very sticky end.
So with the death-wishes stated, yeah, the future is eagerly awaited, let's hope for regular moments of sporadic joy on the way as we wait patiently.

NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.
