Read a suggestion the other week to turn rugby into a 12 man game by getting rid of the flankers and the outside centre.
The motivation was to decrease serious injuries by increasing the amount of space, fewer incidences of players trying to go through players and fewer dangerous two on one type tackles.
Personally I don't like 7s much as a spectacle but this half way house might be worth a look at.

Why don't we make it illegal to handle the ball, you're only allowed to kick it, points awarded for the best dive when a player in the opposition team makes an attempt to tackle you?

FFS everyone knows the risks when they step onto a rugby pitch just like any other sport.

Exactly, hence the concern that parents are becoming increasingly reluctant to allow their children to play the game.

Do you have stats to back that up?

To back up a fall off in numbers or the concern about a fall off in numbers? :P

I don't have either and I'm not involved any more but I've heard that my local club has experienced a large drop off in participation at all ages.
But even if that anecdote is unrepresentative why wait for the drip drip of articles like this to have an effect?
The game has to be seen to be doing something.

Based on fresh air would have sufficed. Thanks :thumleft:

It's actually played to some extent apparently.
I looked on youtube but sadly couldn't find anything.

3 players fewer per side means 6 players fewer per squad or maybe even 9 fewer??
Add to that fewer injuries per match and squad sizes could be reduced further.
Add to that disallowing substitutes except in case of injury and would have the further consequences of reduced emphasis
on bigger, faster, stronger and therefore fewer injuries and further reduced squad sizes.
If 12 a side rugby actually improved the game as a spectacle, that should increase income and make the whole show more
sustainable. Higher Income + Lower costs = Nirvana.
Lots of aspects of Rugby League don't appeal to me (no scrums or lineouts, no contesting at the breakdown) but it evolved into a 13 a side game once it turned professional, maybe they are on to something?

If number 6 is actually Number 8, why not make number 6 the Fly Half?

Also, why is number 9 the Inside Centre rather than Outside Centre?

Or here's an idea, why not just 'Centre'?

These and other questions will be answered on the next episode of Soap ....

If it ever came to pass I'd keep the current numbering, so 1 to 15 with 6, 7 and 13 left out.
Around such anomalies, great mythologies can blossom, or at least a few tall tales.

Should the fly half be the fly 5/8th?

Scrap props and locks and reduce it down to seven players aside.

Nah, sounds like a fûcking stupid game.

Any try against the Jackeen Mexican Kuntz is a thing of beauty.
I loved Ruan’s last try. A long diagonal breakaway effort, but for artistry my vote would go to Rob Lyttle’s second try against the Dragons. The one scored right in the corner in front of the Prom. A beautiful dive, with his body over the line as he twists to touch the ball down. Still a great photograph off it online, but I can’t be ar$ed
