Head in Ulster training camp call

Henry Head turned down a chance to go to Cambridge University
Ballymena's livewire lock Henry Head is one of two players invited to join the Ulster squad at St Andrews for week-long training camp.
Head will be joined by Dungannon's utility back Glen Telford in what Ulster coach Mark McCall terms as a "bonding session" in Scotland.

"Henry has impressed us lately in training," said McCall. "He is a fine athlete and we will see how he goes."

The 24-year-old Salisbury-born forward is a former England Schoolboy player.

Head vied for a second-row spot on the same Schools' side alongside England and Bath duo Steve Borthwick and Andrew Sheridan, who has since turned into a tight-head prop.

The carrot-topped Head moved the season before last to Ballymena from Richmond, the former top-level English club who collapsed in the face of professionalism in 1999, but have since risen again and are playing in the London Division One League.

Head had been a student a Brunel University but was due to start a teaching degree course at Cambridge University in October.

However, having enjoyed his stay at Eaton Park, has decided to stay on and concentrate on rugby for the time being.

Telford, a former Ireland U21 centre, has suffered two major injury problems, but is now back to full fitness.

The 22-year-old is highly-rated in some quarters and can play either fly-half or in midfield.

An Ulster Schools' Cup winner for RBAI in 2000, Telford is studying to be an optician and has now fully recovered from a cracked knee cap and ankle problems.

McCall is taking his full squad of 36 players with him including the handful of young talent who have development contracts.

"It is an important week in our year," said McCall. "Not only from a rugby point of view but also socially.

"We have got a number of younger players there and some new players and living in each other's pockets everyday, you can't help but get to know the people a little better."
No mention of this training camp on the official UR board - You'd think that they were trying to keep it quiet......
