Luke Marshall opened the scoring at the end of the first half before second half tries from Craig Gilroy, Robbie Diack and Jared Payne sealed the extra point for the Ulstermen who take their points tally up to 18.

Treviso held the score at 3-3 for most of the first half through a penalty from Alberto di Bernardo, but that proved to be Treviso’s only points in Franco Smith’s final match in charge.

The game itself was in doubt due to heavy fog in Italy, and even though the game did go ahead as scheduled, visibility was very poor for spectators.

Nobody was quite sure whether Ulster would go all out for another bonus point or if they would focus on the win first, but their questions were answered by Paddy Jackson who slotted over an early penalty to give the visitors the lead.

Treviso were level in the thirtieth minute through di Bernardo’s penalty after Ulster were caught offside on their own 22.

It looked like the scores would be level and both sides would be try-less going into half time, but a sublime grubber kick through late in the half by Jared Payne set away Luke Marshall who dotted down for the first try.

Jackson added a penalty on the stroke of half-time to increase the visitors’ lead, but Ulster’s first period performance did not look deserving of four tries.

In the second half however, lady luck was on Ulster’s side. Jackson quickly added a third penalty after half-time for Ulster to extend their lead to eleven, but it took a while for Ulster to really get going.

They were boosted by the slightly fortuitous sin-binning of Brendan Williams on 58 minutes – the Kiwi full-back having been adjudged of deliberately knocking the ball on.

And Ulster made that man advantage pay as a scrum sucked in all of Treviso’s forwards and Ulster made full use of their extra back for Craig Gilroy to cross the line unopposed for the second try.

It then got even better for Ulster as first Luke McLean was sin-binned as well for deliberately slowing the ball down at the ruck, taking Treviso down to thirteen men, and then Robbie Diack managed to squeeze over for the third try of the afternoon.

Despite being down on the scoreboard, Treviso were determined to score a try and they attacked the Ulster line strongly, however the Ulster defensive line held them out for the second week running.

And their patient play paid off as Ulster managed to score that vital fourth try as some clever footballing skills from Andrew Trimble allowed him to gather the ball and send Payne over in the corner.

Treviso came back again and tried to get the final score, but the Ulster defence stood strong and after a knock on, referee Greg Garner blew for the end of proceedings.

The win increases Ulster’s lead at the top of Pool Five to seven points, and puts them on the verge of quarter-final qualification.
