Junior WC Squad 2012

Post by Mac »

A few of the lads talked a lot @ these parts are going to get little
rest over the Summer - P Jackson, Iain Henderson to name but two.
Hope they all come through in one piece!
Ireland Under-20 Squad Named For Junior World

The Ireland under-20 Squad, sponsored by PwC, for the Junior World Championship in South Africa has been named. The 28 man squad named today by Head Coach Mike Ruddock is drawn in Pool B alongside England, Italy and the hosts South Africa.

The core of the squad featured in the recent under-20 Six Nations Championship which saw Ireland lose out to England in a Grand Slam decider in March.

Seven of the squad featured in the 2011 Junior World Championship. Flankers Shane Buckley and Aaron Conneely, second row Iain Henderson and prop Tadhg Furlong will add experience up front.

In the back line, Ruddock can call upon the experience of Paddy Jackson, who recently starred in Ulster’s Heineken Cup Semi Final win, JJ Hanrahan and scrum-half Kieran Marmion who all featured in 2011.

Ireland under-20 Head Coach Mike Ruddock said, “We are coming into the IRB Junior World Championship on the back of a relatively successful Six Nations having won four out of five of our matches. This gives us some confidence going into the tournament. However, we are in an extremely physical group. We have hosts South Africa up first, followed by the 6 Nations champions England and then the ever improving Italians. It will require a massive effort from our part to overcome such physical size and power but we intend to give it our best shot.”

*Details of a media opportunity with Head Coach Mike Ruddock and selected players in advance of their departure to the tournament will be announced shortly.

Wouldnt be too concerned about any of the young guys no getting their rest. For all the gametime PJ has had this season he will have ample rest before pre season and taking up the 10 shirt full time. Henderson might get a handful of games next season but it wont be a massive number. The rest will again only get a couple of games more than the couple they got this season.

Next season I think Henderson will at least make the bench for the Rabo games, maybe not the big inter pros or games against Ospreys etc but I would say he will get at least 15.

Frankly it's ridiculous that Jackson is being allowed to go to the JWC. He is Ulster's only flyhalf and has hardly played with the team. This tournament will effectively mean he misses the start of pre-season - where players bond and build team spirit. In a position where he has to get up to speed as quickly as possible, the decision is to delay will make it even harder for him.

Add to that the physical and mental stress of carrying a team that is barely competitive playing 5 games in less than three weeks against bigger more professional opposition. Since he is the playmaker and captain he will naturally be targeted and won't have any protection around him. This would have been bad enough IF Ulster has an experienced 10 ahead of Jackson, but allowing sentimentality to potentially ruin Ulster's season before it's begun is up there with the decision of the Light Brigade to charge the Russian artillery.

Liam Toland from the Indo is looking at the flip side to this today
mooting that PJ would be an option for the NZ tour.
This then leaves Ulster’s Paddy Jackson who has the least pitch time with his province and, in Irish eyes, this could be reason enough to leave him behind but I think that could be an opportunity lost for his development in the fast lane. For many that breakthrough to international level comes while riding a curve of confidence based on short representative excellence at lower levels. Clearly miles behind O’Gara at present but a senior tour to New Zealand would do wonders for him and our future.

IF Peejay went to NZ he sit on the bench better he goes to SA and gains some game time .

At least at under 20 level most players get some time on the park if 30 go most of them will play at some point even if only 15 minutes

30 go to NZ maybe 20 - 23 will get game time.

I doubt if Henderson will get more than about 500 minutes on the pitch next year he wouldn't have been playing this year except for final of ERC .

Jackson doesn't need gametime with the u20s - he needs to learn how to play with Pienaar and Wallace. Leicester Tigers are sensibly not allowing George Ford to play for England (and they've a chance in the tournament). This competition is to develop young players not getting much high level experience, so players who are regular starters for their Province shouldn't be anywhere near it.

Fly half only half correct

Ford is not paid by the his Union he's paid by his club Jackson is paid by the Union to assess players it is necessary to watch them play age level rugby .

At the moment Jackson while playing for Ulster plays a very restricted mostly a minor assist role in defence and minimial contact game in attack not really the opportunity to develop his game or exposure.

Learning to play with Wallace aged 34 -- the road to the future-- learning to play with Pienaar with 12 months on his contract

If going to U20 is short term so is the reason for not going

What are the IRFU assessing about Jackson? To see if he can play senior rugby? Ulster are playing him come what may in the team so they won't have to guess how he does at senior level. It would be incredibly obtuse for the IRFU to deny Ulster the chance to sign a NIQ 10 and then also deny them the chance to give Jackson a full pre-season!

The short term issue is to get Jackson up to speed for the season start this year. AFAIK Paddy Wallace and Pienaar are here this year so PJ should spend all the time he can possibly get in the setup that matters and that isn't a series of meaningless underage games in South Africa.

They are assessing a group of players who deserve to play with the best in their age group

Some of them may make future Internationals .

Wallace P and O Driscoll plkayed in the same age XV the friendships made are at this level are as important as the rugby.

15 games??? Dont be silly!!! If we wern't in the HEC final he would still be 5th choice for a place.

Sorry rumncoke but this makes zero sense. All the assessment has obviously been done otherwise they wouldn't be selected in the first place.

Paddy Jackson has played on this team for two years, if he hasn't made friendships by now he's not going to. It is time he made friendships or more importantly understandings with the teammates who matter to his and Ulster's success next season.

He should get a start vs Aironi twice, vs Treviso twice, vs Dragons once at Ravers, Scarlets at Ravers, Edinburgh twice, Glasgow once or twice depending on how they do and Connacht twice. Thats about 11-12 games in the league and if we get the likes of Aironi etc in the HEC I wouldnt be afraid to give him 40 mins at the start to see how he does.

When Ulster sign a backrow, they will have more backrows than they had last year (and no RWC) so Henderson's opportunities are going to be limited to maybe a couple of appearances from the bench.

He is exactly the sort of player the JWC is aimed at, and would benefit from it (unlike Jackson).

Am I missing something? Sure he will be back for July, and as a player who has had limited game time this season I would say him going to SA will be good for him, then he can come back and have nearly two months to get ready for Ulsters new season.

Sounds like an ideal situation for UR and PJ
