World Cup referees

Post by for dog and ulcer »

The panel of 12 contains some old favourites beloved of Ulster Rugby fans!!
Garces
Gauzere
Poite
Barnes
Owens
Doyle
Clancy
Lacey
Joubert
Peyper
Jackson
Pollock
There is a joke there in the last two. A load of??

Everyone's favorite in Connacht, Leighton Hodges is an assistant referee. I wonder which one will ruin the WorldCup?

All of them

Each has their own nuance

Some like to see the game flow

Some kill the game early to promote an open game at the end

Some keep it tight to ensure a close finish

Some cheat

At that level refs don't cheat as such but they as you rightly state have an approach to the game which can lead to I consistency and confusion . In that they penalise offence early in a game which they may overlook later . Similarly they may card a player for a minor accidental offence after a warning and overlook a card for dangerous play .

The thing that players must take into account is that several enjoy the power of the whistle which massages the sense of their perception of their importance .
Thus players frequently have exercise a great deal of self control where some are concerned .

Then again many of the players are well known to some of the refs whose approach to a game may be influenced by that knowledge and referee players instead of the game .

I saw a Jackson Pollock exhibition at the Pompidou Centre in 1982, best described as "interesting". The above list could be said to be "not very interesting".

I say right now I'd be happy to see Wayne Barnes ref the final.
NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.

Most expensive painting ever sold was a Pollock. The one that looks exactly the same as all the others but for some reason sold for more.

Nigel Owens was letting McCaw away with what ever he liked yesterday. I reckon he'll get the final too so NZ will get a free hand at the breakdown.

Stop blaming refs without blaming the linesmen and TMO. The Standard of refereeing today was top notch and no decision good or bad would have changed Irelands outcome. A 14 man Argentina would have beaten Ireland today. Scotland can be slightly miffed but the ref had a fair game.

We will see what the reaction is to Mr Joubert in the coming days. I don't think he had a fair game.

Blaming referees for everything has developed from an art form into an exact science on this message board......fabulous analysis.

No post that I have seen is blaming referees for everything. Strawman argument. You are attacking a stance no one has adopted.

One thing I don't like is refs being too matey with the players, addressing them all by name, praising bits of good play etc. and generally being good ole boys. The ref should keep some distance between himself and the players and be seen to be scrupulously impartial and fair.
The other thing I hate is players who are being told off by the ref reaching out to touch his arm or shoulder in a pally yet obsequious way, ort giving him a friendly little pat. It should be totally hands off the ref at all times, punished by a penalty.
