Lolling the ball back

Post by Spiffsson »

One silly play in rugby is increasingly getting my goat. When a defender (Usually a FB or wing) fields a long ball with acres of space in front of him, he starts to run the ball back at something close to walking pace, dancing around, looking all about him, as thought he has a brilliant move up his sleeve and will explode into it when he is close to the chasers, whom he seems to be inviting to come and get him. This never works, all that happens is that the chasers just scrag the lollygagging defender well beyond the gain line. Zebo has become one of the worst for this daft behaviour. At times on Friday, after collecting the high ball, he looked like he was off for a walk in the park, stopping to smell the roses. The essence of counter attack is speed. Balls should be run back hard, straight and with maximum pace, and support players should be lining up behing the run out man as he progresses forquick passing of the ball
Spedding is not the best FB in the 6n, but I have noticed, when he fields a high ball, he is straight into top speed attacking mode right off the mark with no useless dawdle of a leadup, that can only lose ground. He goes hell for leather staright for the goal line. Mike Brown is something similar though he then wastes all the advantage by not passing.
I wish Joe would have a word on this (and several other habits.)One of the softest and stupidist ways of losing ground in the game.

Sidesteps away from the space into at least two forwards. Classic Kearney.

Big winger running at Kearney.
2 options

1. Run away
2. Flop and miss

Kearney in a rare moment of decisiveness goes for both at the same time

Chases a kick off and gets nowhere near it. Now there is no fullback and Ireland have conceded 70m
