I once went to a beer festival in Karlovac. (back in the Yugoslavia days). A litre of their festival brew was about 3p (and I suspect they were ripping us of because we were the only tourists there.).
Saw the park on the news years later with trenches and gun emplacements.

The rum ration was only abolished in 1970. The Royal Navy seemed to manage alright for a couple of hundred years on a daily ration of the hard stuff. Indeed, it could be argued that it has gone steadily downhill since they abolished it
