Just seen in this mornings paper that Seamus Mallon is off to Northampton.
Seems that last seasons signing of Kevin Maggs has forced him to seek regular game time elsewhere.
It is always sad to see someone leave but he was never going to be a regular in the Ulster squad especially now with Messrs Trimble and hopefully Cave in the wings.
Heading to England for game time, good luck to the big man hope he returns learning how to pass then we could have a good player, will do well to make the team though with Quinlan also there.
It's a shame to see young players go when they haven't been given a decent chance (Mallon, Jennings etc) rather than more experienced players (Cullen, Byrne).
would appear so and with Longwell at SINI he should be in frame for the odd appearence if required with only 3 second rows. With Topping, Bell, Howe, Maggs (and Hump?) all on their last year there should be several new faces the season after next.
That will be the acid test with quality rather than quantity being the order of the day.
The only thing I thought Mallon lacked was an ability to pass at pace. He is strong and a hard runner and if he went for a gap he would go, has proved to be very good at AIL so the only level to test him at after that is Ulster if he isn't getting it then to test himself he has to move on.
Means we will never see the Trimble Mallon combination so many jokes had been made about.
