What position did you/do you play?

Re: What position did you/do you play?
Played 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 at various points in my "career".
Started in 2nd row at school. Moved to the backrow when I started club rugby and then got hauled back into 2nd row when my "pace" deserted me.
Had one game at school on the wing, can't remember exactly why.
Favourite position was definitely no 8. Once scored 3 tries from 8 during medalion year in a 14 - 14 draw against Campbell.

Loosehead nearly always. but tighthead if needed. Played a few games at hooker down the teams and achieved my long held ambition of heading the ball back on our put in ( I saw Ken Kennedy do it in a scrum at Ravers, was amazed and wanted to do it ). No chance of hookers being allowed to pack that low nowadays.

Wing Attack, oh sorry that was netball! I played a lot of that which wasn't bad for a shortar$e.
Never played rugby myself but as I was a tiny wee slip of a thing 20 years ago and had played rugby, I couldn't have seen myself anywhere else other than scrum half.
Nowadays it'd probably be front row lolololol.

Re: What position did you/do you play?
Started my rugby career at school as a loose head. I think we must have had the tallest front row in schools rugby as we were all 6 footers. My club rugby alternated between blindside wing forward and number 8 although I preferred blind side. As I got older, nearly said matured but hey, I moved into second row. Finally quit playing in my early 40s due to too many niggly injuries which are now making themselves felt standing on the terrace on a cold winters evening. Having said that I loved every minute.

Never wrestle with a pig. You end up covered in muck and the pig loves it.

THP mainly, although at various times I turned out at 1,2 3, 6, 7 , 9, 12 and 11. That is a possible guide to the quality and level of my performances and also to the era in which I played - and no, William Webb Ellis was not still alive!

Spent the majority of 35+ playing years at 1 - moved to 3 as the years rolled by. Played every position in the pack at some stage or other - even played outside centre in a game once (sort of friendly/charity thing) with Don Whittle at inside centre with me!!

11, 14, sprint background during same period so possessed more than adequate speed
.......but lack of adequate bulk (no longer a problem). Scenario usually resulted with
the 999 call bypassing the ambulance services and going straight for the road traffic
accident investigation unit.

Re: What position did you/do you play?
There was once a very similar/identical thread but just to be sociable - I played at school only for my sporting prowess lay with 14 sticks & a gutty ball, though in fairness, such was my talent I could beat most golfers using an orange & a hockey stick - I only say this because I abhor false modesty.
I played mainly in the backline but once guested as hooker and on my only appearance in the pack dutifully stamped on a Bangor lads head who had trampled my knee when I'd been at full back in the game at our place.
In the backline, I played for school in every position, I think mainly they were seeking a position for me where I could use my aggression but mask my snail-like pace. Always enjoyed 9 against Campbell & Methody for they were always so large & well-nourished (we're talking the 70s) over-confident and ponderous, a joy to get ripped into.
Anyway, I ended up between 12 & 15, mainly 15, where in those days your main aim was to be able to catch a ball & boot it a distance or to be able to tackle a man, if I could get to a player, I could tackle him & have had the tooth abscesses to prove it, but mainly they had to be pretty bloody slow.
It's quite remarkable that I'm so good looking with all those boots in the teeth, I always had a "tackle round the ankles boy" teacher. Modern coaches appear to think that they have very cleverly just thought of that sort of tackle - chop tackle anyone.

NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.
Re: What position did you/do you play?
Play halfback primarily but could plug a hole anywhere in the backline as and when needed.

Nice one - that team would be a sight to behold in full flow - now we just need someone to design the kit - Scholar?UlsterNo9 wrote:Play halfback primarily but could plug a hole anywhere in the backline as and when needed.
