NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.

Nah.

Chris Henry talks to the referee in play too much and will be away with Joe for vast swathes of the season. While its OK for any player to [remind the referee of the rulebook/yap at the referee for decisions] (delete as applicable) up till the point the ref tells them to shut up, you don't want your captain getting on the wrong side of the referee in this way.

Rory Best is a fine leader by example; not so sure of his decisions on the pitch. Besides, he'd be gone with Ireland half the time.

Robbie Diack is the man. Most consistent player, relatively injury free, not likely to be tied up on international duty and did well in the few games he led this year.
NZ and Leinster have made a point of having their biggest cheat as captain.

Captains will rarely get yellow carded

Henderson, too young. Rory, too prone to injury. Diak, ego more out of control. Still maintain it's Henry and Wilson.

How the blazes can you go.......... :banghead: :banghead: what is your rationale, I'd love to hear it?

Ego and Diack are not two words I would use in the same sentence, do share please.

Yeah, he seems like a really lovely guy, have always thought that and would never have had him down as having a big ego.

Snipe you may disagree and most seem to have different opinions but I think Rory is quite injury prone along with international duty won't start enough games for naming him as captain to be practical( my first choice if the above were not the case).
Henry, again how many games did he play this year? Bar injury bound to be away a lot, and also I'm not so sure he would be most suitable as a captain either way.
Diack - fully fit side diack won't start, so how can that be justified.
That leaves Wilson, maybe he's the correct one, or maybe he's the only one left that could be suitable of the current squad...

Diack is one of the nicest guys in the squad. I was talking to him after the Leinster game back in December when he was captain and he was so humble it was incredible, "ego out of control" is as far from the truth as possible.
You haven't seen me at my best yet. Let's be honest, you probably never will.

It would be strange not to have your skipper as a starter. Rory & Robbie at VC for me, more VCs should whoever our coach will be decides otherwise.
Good point, well made...

But (whisper it), I don't actually think Rory Best or Chris Henry are great captains.

How many times have we absolutely lost the plot when big Johann has left the field? How many of those times were Chris and Rory still on the field...? Answering off the top of my head; too many.

We all know the big man leaves a massive leadership void - why would guys that have previously failed to fill his boots be expected to do so now that he is gone?

Inspirational leaders yes, no doubt. But there is more to captaining than just smashing someone in a tackle or making a critical turnover in a game. Decision making in the heat of battle and keeping a good rapport with the referee are things I worry about.

I don't know the answer to the captain issue. Hopefully it resides within the squad somewhere, but I'm not 100% sure it does.

Amiga - it' a fair point. Both Rory and Chris have captained Ulster before but personally i don't think either has shown themselves (yet) to be a standout captain (as opposed to one of the leaders on the pitch). Now both have matured and are admittedly playing in a better Ulster side now than when they had the role previously. I don't think we have a standout captain and for me it's a case of pick the side first and then select your captain.

Don't agree with much of that, but that's beside the point.
The issue is, we know very little about Franco. How can he just parachute in and be made captain? There are a lot of guys who have been here and probably believe they have earned the right.

After the squad get together for pre season the staff will make the call on the factors mentioned above. I feel (I being the important part here) that he will be the most suitable, if he fits in up here as hoped. You're either the right person or not, to award it to Henry for example because he's paid his dues, to me is not the main reason behind selecting someone. From the bits I've seem of him and all I've read of him since his transfer rumours to ulster started I feel his has all the characteristics of a worthy captain.
If he arrives and doesn't settle or integrate well with the squad then of course he's not the correct choice.

Its Diack for me. A true gentleman and an Ulsterman to the core. Having seen him all season anyone who questions his place in the starting 15 frankly needs their rugby head examined.
