Speaking of scrum halves Ben Youngs has pulled out of the Lions tour to be with his brother and a Tom's wife after she has been diagnosed as terminal with cancer. I've never been a fan of YBY but warm to him for his priorities. I hate cancer more than I hate Leinster.
NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.

A couple of years back, Stringer would have been vastly superior to Marshall and would probably have played as much rugby at Ulster as he would have anywhere else, given that Pienaar was still involved with the Springboks for most of his time in Belfast. For the entire duration of Pienaar's Ulster career, Stringer would have been the second choice at Ulster. Given the number of games Marshall has racked up and the number of minutes on the pitch, it would also have been an improvement over the options Stringer had at Munster. Given that bringing Stringer on wouldn't have been a complete liability, he might have racked up even more game time and took some of the load off Pienaar. Would have been an astute move, in my opinion. Would be now, too. Whether Stringer is amenable to moving to another Irish province or not another matter; but nothing would show up the IRFU's ludicrous policies than Ulster bringing in a 39 year-old retired international IQ to block up the procession of world class scrum-halves waiting to clamour out of Ulster's changing rooms...

Well said, Baggy. Had a very similar reaction to you.

Admirable decision by Ben indeed to pass up on the tour to be with his brother in such a terrible time.

FWIW I'd still take Stringer here and would have offered him a deal at almost any point over the last few years. P won't mentor anyone and I don't think Shanahan will make it. I'd sooner see Lloyd or another junior as back up to Cooney and if the latter breaks down so be it.

Solid words on Young Ben Youngs Baggy, in full agreement. I read over the weekend he's only the 2nd player to turn down a call-up to the Lions (or some variant thereof) - John Taylor being the other for a principled stance over apartheid. I hope Ben Youngs gets all the support possible in the coming months and thereafter. the same to Tom and the wider family.

When we brought in Peel, the prospect of such a mentor must have passed. If Peel has one job and that is to develop SH play and he manages to make a fist of that then his salary will not be lost.
