My father said it was it was a gentleman my the name of Ernie Crawford who first applied the term to describe the back room Blazers as alickadoes .
The Gentleman played for Malone and Captained Ireland in the twenties .
The term was used to a member of the press on a return train journey up from Dublin and was seized upon because of it has the ring of mild put down on those like to pretend to have a depth of knowledge based on their own experience .
The type of gent who stands at the Bar and starts “

Captained Ireland 15 times with a 70% success rate.UlsterNo9 wrote:The same Ernie that drove the fastest milk cart in west Belfast?Frank wrote:Ernie Crawford is a legend btw

Of those who have captained Ireland on more than 10 occasions , only Karl Mullen was more successful 15 /73.66%.
These guys don't tend to get mentioned when discussing Ireland's most successful skipper.
Others:
Rory 30/68.33
Tom Kiernan 24/66.66
BOD 83/63.25
POC 28/62.5

My father also spoke of the time Ernie Crawford was playing full back for Ireland -- was facing a two on one attack---and scream pass the fnn ball -- which the player did and Ernie then tackled the guy into touch.
Me da played for Malone for a few years before the war where Ernie was held in high regard.
