Globally, yes. There were 5 different frequencies bands allocated around the world and it was a while before you could get a phone that would support 3G everywhere. However if the phone didn't support 3G in a particular country, it dropped back to GSM.

In Europe it was slightly different, as before launch, the EU mandated the 3G frequencies to be used within the EU countries so you could have a common phone in these countries anyway.

However 4G is different again. Unlike the original GSM and 3G where there was a limited number of frequency bands allocated worldwide, 4G has been designed so that a country/region can allocate any free frequency they want within a very large range.

So in the UK and some other countries, switching off analog TV means they can sell off these frequencies for 4G while in the past, these frequencies weren't available for mobile networks. That means the technical challenges of supplying components that work for all these frequencies is much greater than GSM and 3G.

However 4G is really only for data (unless you use a voice over internet service like Skype), so phones will still use 3G frequencies for voice calls, and if 4G data isn't available, the phone will drop down to 3G, then GSM data.

Well the eldest daughter turns 18 tomorrow and guess what....she wants an iphone 5.

1...are they all they're made out to be?

2...are they well made...built for a bit of abuse?

3...any deal recommendations out there preferably with unlimited data?

1. I love my iPhone, so I would say they are all they are made out to be versus others.

2. They don't stand up well to abuse, glass screens are £50-60 to replace.

3. You can usually find a good selection of all network deals on the Phones4U website. I've used them the last 2-3 upgrades & have found them very easy to deal with.

Hope that helps Browner.

Having recently changed to the iphone I am not convinced as to their overall superiority. My main dislike is being tied the the Apple system.

In answer to your points.

1 Probably yes

2. No, prone to being easily damaged, as WW mentioned the screen can be a problem as can the pins in the docking / charging
connector.

3. "3 Mobile" seem to have some good contract deals - http://www.three.co.uk/Store/Phones/iPhone
Or if you are looking to buy the phone and get a Sim only deal O2 Simplicity have some good offers - .http://www.o2.co.uk/tariffs/simplicity

Happy shopping

1. That's like asking what is the best religion browner! People will argue endlessly on this subject so there is no point starting, but the iPhone does come out very high on JDPower satisfaction surveys, so the vast majority of people who have them, like them
2. Build quality is very good and they feel like a quality product while some other phones feel a bit plasticky. Having said that, the combination of smart phone + gravity + hard surface may not have a good outcome so a case or cover is a worthwhile investment. There are zillions of different phone cases on the market so a voucher may be better than guessing what style a teenager would like.
3. Don't really know tbh. Price comparison sites may help?

1. Brilliant. Love my iPhone.

2. iPhone 5 are a bit more durable than iPhone 4/4S. Get a good case and a bit of care and she'll be fine.

3. Mine is around £27 a month (using NHS discount) from vodafone with unlimited data for the first 3 months, 1GB a month after that

3. Giffgaff. Best call plans ("goodybags") bar none. Sim only though so you need to pick up the phone elsewhere. I reckoned i was better off after about 6 months

Giffgaff are the best call plans. We use one in our tablet. Problem is an iphone5 is gonna make a big dent in the wallet especially if bought outside a contract.

Why a five, particularly. I am perfectly happy with my iPhone 4 and the contract is £20 per month with O2 (there are probably better out there). Is the iPhone 5 really that much better or is it just wanting the latest model because there will probably be a new model in the autumn? Anyone who has a smartphone without some kind of protective cover is just plain silly.

Anyway...thanks for all the responses folks...just 2 more questions...anyone have any experience of an outfit called Mobiles direct and does it matter what provider you're with?

Get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning Rocky?

Where to start here. I'd imagine if iPhone 5 has been stated, probably nothing else will do, since the whole point in the iPhone is that it's used as a status symbol. You could get the latest Android for about £200 cheaper over the course of a two year contract, but that probably won't do for the same reason.

I own an ipod and no other Apple devices. It was before they got all nasty. That's to say I don't really buy Apple gear, for a wealth of reasons. But my experience is that almost every iPhone owner I know has cracked their screen, compared with significantly fewer owners of other phones. It's possible this was a particular weakness in earlier models through and has been corrected - I can't think of anyone who has cracked a screen on the latest model.

As far as using a cover goes. If you're buying an iPhone 5 for an 18 year old daughter, trying to get her to use a cover may be very difficult. Part of what your paying for here is the beauty of the product. Most covers completely ruin the look of the thing. I have one of the latest Samsung devices, I really like it, but I don't use a cover. I've had no problems in this regard and I have dropped it a few times (at times I've been scared to look at the damage, but it's down fine) - never broken my screen. Screen protectors are another matter and can be very discreet, and do a lot of good. Couple of quid off eBay for a packet of 10.

Apple fanboys: you should probably ignore my second paragraph. It's deliberately provocative.

3 are good for data, but coverage is non existant in many areas (even those with reasonable populations)

Increasingly I'm able to use my prehistoric smart phone (without a cover) without resorting to mobile data. There's WiFi everywhere.

Topics currently being discuss are ticketing systems, iPhones, Leinster, Mattfeckin'Williams and bloody petrol prices.

I consider them barely adequate as currently delineated. That should set the tongues awaggin' Snipe. :thumleft:
