If you move your shoulder when preparing to take a conversion, that is your run-up started - Discuss!

I think I've only seen that once or twice before, with ref ordering a re-take and no charge at the kicker/ball.

Interestingly, Rob Baxter had "no complaints" about the decision, seemingly putting the blame for the defeat on his own players.

I'd place it in the same category as a scrum half standing over a ball in the ruck and faking a lift to catch players offside

Personally far to many kickers have an excessive pre-kick routine --Jonny Wilkinson and there was a welsh man a few years back who really took it to extremes .

Thus to an extent if you consider the run to be a pre kick routine then so is shoulder movement etc if that is part of your routine it's as much pre as the run up.

Let's change it to something like the NFL -- a three man sequence passer catcher'placer kicker with the charge starting on the pass the kick to be taken in front of the posts anywhere between 10 metre and and 22 . The charge being from the 5 metre line . and stuff the respect for the kicker . like WTF is that all-about. Like your for him or against him but one things sure few are neutral .

He wasn’t faking anything.

Looked a bit harsh to me based on the ref’s explanation that he moved his shoulder.

Approach means to get nearer. One could argue that he didn’t get any nearer to the ball so his approach hadn’t started.

EDIT - other footage shows a small step forward so it looks like the ref was right for the wrong reason.

Bizarre decision. Some kickers stand twitching for half a minute before running up to the ball!
Is this some new diktat from WR designed to speed up kicks? The Northampton players seemed to be aware of it.
Surely the common sense approach is that once he moves his feet, the run up has started.

That would always have been my understanding.

One might say a premiership reject if one wanted to be unkind, but then there is only one out half who was not rejected by Ulster but rather spat on for a single "spit "
