Potential new scrum half after Ruan leaves,

Post by Cracker »

I know I am opening myself up to ridicule from some but friends and myself have been discussing the situation after the eventual very sad departure of Ruan.
Some think that Stuart Olding would have the potential to make a great scrum half and given the abundance of backs that we have at the moment should be tried out at some stage of the season in a games we are well ahead in. There is also the serious shortage of good scrum halves in the Irish game. He is strong, a good tackler, passer and quick.
Yours views and feel free to knock this purely discussion idea down. It is simply put up for some serious discussion as our options are very very limited.

The most likely option would be that we pick up John Cooney from Connacht when his contract ends after this season. He'd likely do a job until one of Stewart or O'Donnell bursts onto the scene and his basics are at a level where he's vastly preferable as a starting scrumhalf to Marshall. I don't see us trying to convert any of our other players to 9, especially not Olding who has been messed about enough already, we don't want to pull a Madigan on him. Lyttle would be an interesting option though, great boot, what looks to be a decent pass and has excellent composure for a lad his age, still I would be shocked if they were to ever try it.

I'd love to see Lyttle give it a go. He's likely to get a lot of game time this season and he can learn from 'Ruan Piennar, ULSTER's number 9' (sorry, broke into song there).
He's good hands, he's faster than greased rabbit droppings off a polished shovel and as things stand, he hasn't missed a kick..... unlike someone we could mention

Has Lyttle ever played 9 before other than at that one ruck that Pienaar was buried under on Friday?

I can't see him being ready to play there any sooner than either O'Donnell or Stewart if not and I reckon he's currently our best prospect as a winger.

Can see a direct likeness between Olding and a certain Matt Giteau who is well known as being able to play centre and both half back positions. Would I like to see Olding play 9.... nah, could he, probably to Pro 12 starting standard, European bench level.

Don't forget we are not just losing a world class scrum half, but also goal kicker, the obvious choice is James Hart but he is signed up for a few years now. Hart is on record as saying that none of the provinces approached him before he joined Racing, why we didn't begs the question as he covers scrum half, out half and is decent off the tee. Rumour has it he needs an attitude transplant, but well we all know about rumours, he has held down a professional career at a decent level so far, therefore I say that throws the rumours out of the window.

We are lucky Paddy has matured and blossomed to the level that he has in that he can take on the mentor role within the 9 and 10 axis.

Matured options are pathetic -

Charlie Mulchrone formerly of Worcester now Harlequins (English) is IQ.
Michael Heaney was Championship player of the season last year but yet wasn't picked up by an aviva premiership club.

Is there an IQ scrum half plying his trade ITM Cup, I'm told there is? Why did Leinster not pick him up this year? Well once you start doing the IRFU Math it all becomes quite clear.
