A History of Irish Rugby......
For those now self isolating or who will be indoors much more social distancing- or young lads who have no idea of our glory days (yes there were some)
A link below to a decent watch......
The Evolution of Irish Rugby - Running time 2 hours 25 minutes

If there is any demand or interest I'm happy to trove through the online archives to find old matches which would be worth a watch and a bit of discussion over the next few weeks / months. Enjoy!

The year is 1983, highlights from all of Irelands games during this campaign.
Willie John McBride coached the side, Trevor RIngland and Doc Dave Irwin feature throughout, joined in the backline by Ollie Campbell in the form of his life.

Re: A History of Irish Rugby......
Many thanks. Havnt watched them all yet but interesting how little time is lost taking penalties and conversions, what a shambles nearly all line outs were, and the science of preparing the "kicking tee" a la Hugo McNeill!
Re: A History of Irish Rugby......
That's a fascinating set of programmes bringing back great memories.
I was at the home games and at the game in Cardiff which was a miserable experience surrounded by typically arrogant Welsh fans. Ireland hardly ever won there.
Younger fans should watch the way that scrums formed immediately the ref called them and were over in a few seconds. Wasn't that safer than the present day borefest?
I had forgotten how kickers of penalties, down the touch line, dug divots and set up the ball for a kick where the opposition got the throw in to the lineout. How silly it all seems now.
Rugby was a much different game where players sought space and were physically much lighter, And they all went to work on Monday morning whether down a coal pit or a professional office.

Re: A History of Irish Rugby......
My favourite wee moment in the 'Evolution' was a dog running onto the pitch as the teams ran out before an early international and a bloke shooing it away.

You'll never find it pal, Triple Crowns in 1982 & 85. *3 they shared the title with France having lost in Wales & beat the rest.
Good viewing mind you.
NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.

Re: A History of Irish Rugby......
Just watched again the first 'Great Irish Rugby Victories' again. Points to ponder:
Mike Gibson featuring very prominently. The word mercurial' was invented to describe him.
Gibson taking a forearm shot to the face in the first Wales match. Clear red card these days
In the first Australia match, when Gibson's try was disallowed, the scrum had set before he was back in position!
Gibson's score and other contributions in the Scotland game in '70.
Celebrating a try in the black and white era consisted of a friendly word or possibly a handshake or a clap on the shoulder if emotions were running really high.
