Friends of the Cancer Centre

Post by rumncoke »

I recently received a copy of their Newsletter Autumn /Winter 2022 called the Power of Friends

The eye catch story on the front was

"If sharing my story saves a life it will be worth it"

With that in mind I thought that the above statement could be paraphrased a number of ways

If this thread saves a life it would be worth it if raises one donation it would be worth it if that donation gives hope and life to one person it would be worth it.

The thread could be used by those affected by Cancer and provide a space for others to offer encouragement to them.

I know personally that the encouragement I have received from those who belittle my input provided that necessary spark of hope .

Back now to the Newsletter which stated that Brian Cave was now Chairman of the Board and devoted a page to Iain Henderson

Good post Rumn. :thumleft:

At least on this thread you are not only allowed to talk balls, but it is positively encouraged.

One other very tangible thing the Friends of the Cancer Centre do is to pay for the parking of those who have to attend by car. Often visits are frequent and long and could run up a tidy wee sum in parking charges - something not everyone can afford, but this charity will swap your parking ticket for a prepaid one allowing you to leave the hospital carpark free of charge. (and if you are well enough off to pay the charges, just don't make the swap).

Just one of a number of good things they do ... very worthy of support by those of us who don't have cancer (but possibly will have sometime).
I'm not arguing -

The charity relies entirely on the generosity of the local community

and funds 38 additional staff including 13 specialist nurses , local research and support for families in difficult times such as assistance to parents to stay in Belfast while their child is in the cancer centre .

A question Captain is Brian Cave the Father of Darren ?

I have a friend ( strange as that may seem ) who has recently been informed that a close relative has terminally cancer -- you can see the hurt and pain in him which he is holding back --- having been there a long time ago -- my advice is -- not to hold it in, if you want to cry --cry -- there is no shame in it -- if your scared of others seeing --- get in your car go to somewhere private --- and cry -- let the pain out --if your scared of to talk to you wife about -- find a friend -and bore them and if they are a friend --- they will let you .

Bottled pain hurts more .

Good advice, Rum. Far better to let pain be expressed with some element of control, rather than bottle it up to simply grow inside or to break out in destructve ways when control is lost.

Just read recently that 20% prostate cancers in Northern Ireland are being diagnosed at STAGE 4

Gentlemen while STAGE 4 cancer is treatable it is incurable because the cancer has spread and 90% of spread to the BONES Prostate cancer also spreads frequently to the LIVER and LUNGS.

There are very few symptoms with Prostate cancer thus it is advisable for men to start to have their PSA checked at the age of 50 and if normal about every 3 years thereafter

It is a simple blood test

1/5 th are currently leaving it too late don't be one of them

The consultant will order and MRI before any Biopsy

remember PSA between 6-10 it is 4-1 against cancer but two raised readings maybe reason for concern if taken about a month apart but can still be due to a large prostate rather than cancer.

A friend went private had the scan and results within 10 days

My advise at this stage relax.

Thank you I am borderline on all counts so far, 8 and 12 at age 76, so 4-1 against sounds about right.............. so will presume the best until advised otherwise!!
many thanks

Cheers guys. Genuinely touched
MRI ordered but even private sector queue now a few weeks. But consultant made encouraging noises of unlikely anything sinister.
