Bryn Cunningham in the Daily Telegraph - stop thinking about winning

Post by KerrBear »

“I think there has to be a little bit of a change of focus, including talking about winning things too much,” Cunningham said. “I think a lot of the time it puts undue expectation and pressure and is probably unfair in the sense that we’re not in that space, we don’t operate in the same market as a huge number of other teams within Europe in particular and certainly not with Leinster either.

For someone at the top of a sports team to say stop thinking about winning is a total disgrace

I agree entirely KerrBear. What's the point of Ulster Rugby if we don't aim to win our matches.

At least he and the organisation will have smashed their KPIs over the last decade in that case. Bravo lads :thumleft:

What's the point then Bryn? It's not an old boys club.

He should be sacked

He’s completely clueless. A lot of poor decision making from Ulster rugby over the past several years can be traced back to him.

He was never a leader as a player and he’s certainly not a leader in his current role.

The question has to be what could Ulster achieve if it was fantastically run and performed as well as it could, players reaching their potential, a great culture about the place, great value from any NIQs. With Cunningham there we don't have that answer, Cunningham out!

Taken in the full context, I think what Bryn said is perfectly true - we're not in a position to be competing, but what he goes on to say is also true that we need to be bringing players through our academy, building bridges with schools etc. In that context, nothing to see here . . . (except, maybe he shouldn't be stating the bleedin' obvious).

. . . also. . . I would take issue with the lazy and incorrect journalism which states that Ulster have a "sole piece of silverware since 1999 – the Celtic League title in 2005"

Wrong on the number, and wrong on the year.

We won Celtic Cup in 2003, and won the Celtic League in 2006

(which still isn't enough, tbf)
.
I'm not arguing -
I'm just explaining why I'm right

The interview has been on the website for days - link to the video below - nothing to get your knickers in a twist about.

Less talk of winning trophies but we’re of capable of beating anyone on the day, notwithstanding the financial differences iirc.

https://ulster.rugby/content/profession ... cunningham

It’d be fairly silly to bang on about winning trophies when the international contingent in our squad will have been cut by half given the exits at the end of last season and this.

Operations director.

Seems to think he’s now the Head coach/Director of rugby going by that interview.

“Head of Rugby Operations and Recruitment”.

Which doesn’t really sound unlike a DOR, does it?
