seems that Steiner has been bumped up to backs coach.. he certainly was a very smart footballer, but in the last season his legs looked a bit heavier.. and williams seems to like cave. interesting one.

I think this is a sensible move. Steiner is a very smart footballer that has played in a variety of positions through the backline and should be able to offer good insight, especially for the younger guys. He also has a good tactical boot, which should help our young outhalves, especially Ian Humphreys as both kick off the left foot.

Fair shout as he is one of the best tactical backs we have ever had, this bit sums him up well :thumleft:
“The feedback from all the playing group and Matt is that he really is the standout with regard to his analysis of the game and his ability to analyse what was going on.”

Excellent appointment imo, never had great pace but his tactical awareness and nous allied with good hands, good boot and ability to step either side made him stand out, and has been a success story among Ulsters overseas signings.

Always gave the impression he was one of the games thinkers...........hope he's here for the long haul.

Thanks to Matt Williams, hopefully the days when we turned down the likes of Matt Sexton are long gone.

Yes a good appointment. You missed his ability to tackle and decide which tackle was required for each situation Browner. I trust he can pass that on also.

Notice how the full details re BJ's release came to us? - by the local press reporting Reid speaking at the launch of Premier Sports Management hospitality programme at Belvoir Park Golf Club. We remain low in the pecking order as fans.

The early release actually was first reported on the Sharks website the day it was announced here that he was signed, first page of this thread, but repeated to save looking it up again.

Once again The Sharks and SA Rugby have shown the maturity expected of a professional sport by agreeing to release one of their veterans early, to join Ulster in Ireland.

Brendon (BJ) Botha has served The Sharks with distinction and pride since 2001, winning 15 caps for the Springboks along the way. The release also impacts on the international team plans with SA Rugby more than willing to support The Sharks attempts to keep BJ in the country for the next two years. Despite this generous offer from both unions, BJ Botha made a tough call.

"The decision has not been easy for either my family, or me, but with a baby on the way, my wife is not able to fly beyond a certain date in August and if we are to move, now is the time. We have taken the decision in the best interest of my career and most importantly, my family. My emotions on the subject are beyond question, but for me, my family is vitally important, and I would like the opportunity to experience playing at a high level in another environment,” says BJ.

The Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl said that whilst he had served them well, The Sharks have a more than competent squad of front row players and extremely promising youngsters coming up through the ranks to fill the gap.

Indications here as well..............but i agree with his comment about certain groups of fans being low in the pecking order.
Botha made a brief visit to Belfast this week to complete his medical and met the squad before returning to South Africa. He and his family will move to Belfast for good in a few weeks and Brendan was open about his first impressions of the province;

Absolutely...........high or low he invariably got it correct, but sure i have to leave you something.

Smart move by Williams .......

Reid is to busy trying to butter up where he thinks the money is to worry about the normal fan  so nothing new there.

I know, I heard Reid got his bathroom repainted last year, and he didn't even call me to ask my opinion, the cheeky slabber

Is that not what he should be doing? He'll get the fans money at the turnstyle and if he can get a bit more from the business community and elsewhere, to plow back into the team, then the fans should be content with that.

Mike Reid is never slow to hand out complimentary tickets to fans at away games as those in Cork 2 seasons ago will remember when there were none to be found until the CEO jumped in to save the day to baying fans outside the ground who came without tickets. Anyway this has gone off topic ...

Right on Cables,

There were many moments that contributed to our League Championship Season, but Steiners try saving tackle in the corner late on at Musgrave Park secured a 20-17 win.

Came from nowhere.

An ezine at the time of the corporate thingy would have been appropriate IMO.

BTW at Cork 2 years ago it was myself who informed MR of 2 ticketless fans outside the gate and requested assistance from MR. I then took 2 tickets to the gate where our 2 fans were stood in hopeful anticipation.

And now for us who read the UR website.
Paul Steinmetz confirmed as Player/Coach for 2008/09
22 August 2008, 4:47 pm
By Anne Perry

Ulster Rugby today confirmed that current player Paul Steinmetz has been appointed as player/coach for the 2008/09 season and will, alongside, his own training coach the backs.
Born in Paraparaumu, New Zealand, Paul Steinmetz arrived at Ravenhill in October 2003 having previously played Super 12 rugby for both the Hurricanes and the Highlanders.
Steinmetz is delighted with the role and had this to say earlier on today,
“For me this is a huge opportunity to potentially bridge the gap between being a professional player and having a proper job as a coach. The last few years I have found myself much more interested in coaching and during training I would analyse the coaching style and think a lot about what makes a good coach, so I guess in that sense I have been interested in the coaching side of things.
The biggest fear I had about the shift in my role was whether or not the players would listen to me, but so far they seem to be keen to listen so that is great. Coaching was never a life time ambition for me but certainly at the end of this season I will be looking more into which direction I go on.
I am learning a lot working alongside Matt, Steve, Neil and the rest of the management and support staff, there is plenty of knowledge to draw on every day”
