Re: Ulster ‘A’ v Leinster ‘A’ Fri 15th Jan 3pm KO Live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport NI website

With the back line we have and the number of options my advice to a player if he was of the proper size would be to change to back row especially if lacking a little pace Ulster need a pacy back row player to make the gain line weight is fine except when it meets a similar mass moving faster.

Re: Ulster ‘A’ v Leinster ‘A’ Fri 15th Jan 3pm KO Live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport NI website

There is a difference between mouthing as a scrum half and trying to tell the referee to blow his whistle . It can be annoying waste of time . Re off side — when I was playing years ago if the ball was playable even before scrum half touched it the off side line ceased to exist . Now one is left to ...

Re: Ulster ‘A’ v Leinster ‘A’ Fri 15th Jan 3pm KO Live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport NI website

The thing I noticed about Finlay was he looked less out of place amongst the players than last year with the Ireland squad He looked taller and more robust . The Jury is still out on Doak in my opinion -- he wastes to much time appealing , if the ref can see the ball it is basically a waste of time ...

Re: Leinster v Ulster Fri Jan 8th 7:35pm KO

Very true because back a day or two the only permissible body contact by a ball carrier on the would be tackler was his hand the tackler had freedom to tackle -- but not body check ie shoulder only approach . now the ball carrier is allowed to use hips, knees , forearms, head , and shoulder any cont...

Re: Futureproofing after Marcell

As i said there are guys who are first receivers and guys who are not -- you only need about four in the forwards -- but those who aren't hard yard men need to get the ball early by quick recycle before the opposition assume their defence line up. slow ball against a heavier pack makes even the best...

Re: Futureproofing after Marcell

There are two types of Ball carriers -- the first receiver gain line bull head down quick, recycle most teams need about three The second is the support second receiver who can run the length of the pitch some back rows are the second type and some the first, the problem comes when you expect the se...

Re: Ulster Backline Attack

There are two ways to pass the ball to wing First a strong pass from 10 -13 laying deeper than normal ( the other is the scrum half with a long pass but the opposition adjust the defence which is why Ruan and Ulster started to become predictable and wings didn't have the space to score) Or a very de...

Re: Ulster Backline Attack

Defensively the biggest loss at the moment is Marshall --Last year Marshall organised the defence outside on the centre /wing by shepherding the opposition wide -- Hume doesn't seem to have that ability yet -- gets to far forward with space outside and gets the hand off in the face. Neither Feddes o...

Re: Leinster v Ulster Fri Jan 8th 7:35pm KO

When was the last time you saw a player being sent off for failure to push straight ie Boring -- which in the laws of the game is described as dangerous play . The law makers and those who apply them have made the game more dangerous by the changes they have made and their failure to apply the Laws ...

Re: Leinster v Ulster Fri Jan 8th 7:35pm KO

Captain you are right in both points You were told not to duck --because a high tackle was one above the shoulders i.e. a straight arm to the neck -- duck and eat a forearm well that was your fault and you were responsible for your own safety -- now run straight at the opposition and if your hit in ...

Re: Leinster v Ulster Fri Jan 8th 7:35pm KO

Leinster played the Leinster game-- wait for the penalties -- get into the 22 and play 3 man lift and go ( the two supporting fringe players blocking would be tacklers ensuring inching over the gain line ) suck the defence into a ruck area remove the cover defence -- one on one in space and score --...

Re: Leinster v Ulster Fri Jan 8th 7:35pm KO

Meanwhile back at the ranch --- Leinster won the Leinster way --wait long enough and the penalties will come --- kick them into the 22 -- play 3 man pick and go ( fringe support players blocking would tacklers ) suck the opposition defence in to the ruck and go wide if you have to . Defensively play...

Re: Leinster v Ulster Fri Jan 8th 7:35pm KO

Never mind the players learning the laws --- 2/3 of the game of rugby is how to beat the laws.. which is easy- peasy because none of the refs do or only apply them 1/2 the time. "How many times have I penalised Ulster -- where are we just out side the Ulster 22 -- penalty to Ulster they can't score ...
