Re: Squad for next year
Who do you think DK would turn to if rog or sexton were to pick up an injury? Would he pick humph despite him never having been near a squad or would he go with paddy and take the likes of McFadden as his coverall back?
If DK took humph we'd be up a creek without a paddle!!! Without Ruan to talk young Jackson through a match it would be a big ask for him.

I know de Villers is a great admirer of him but its not set in stone. I would love to see him goto the WC so I can see him in action.backawaygoonahead wrote:Thats just an astonishing question. Like others I'd be very happy should the ever quirky de Villiers not pick him but since he is amongst Ruan's greatest admirers (albeit as a 10) not much chance of that.damianmcr wrote:Why does everyone think Ruan will be going to the WC?
Re: Squad for next year
He was 1st choice scrum half in the autumn (although Du preez was injured).
Re: Squad for next year
I'm pretty sure Pienaar will go to World Cup. He is too versatile to leave out and also he is a good goal kicker, you wouldnt lose out if you have to take a frontline kicker off. Currently i would say the SA scrumhalf pecking order is as follows:
Fourie Du Preez, Ruan Pienaar, Francois Hougaard, Enrico Januarie, Mcloed/Pretorious.
I dont think Januarie will go as he hasnt been playing for the Stormers and is coming to the end of his career, and Hougaard has been playing mostly on the wings. Furthermore Hougaard is not a great kicking Scrumhalf, so Pienaar's all around game gives him that edge, not to mention his experience.
As for the squad next year.
I think Ulster need quality back up in the backrow. Faloon has had a very good season but realistically we need another seven to help the guy out. Hopefully they could sign somebody, or on a out of there note upskill Kyriacou to play both Openside and Hooker, which would mean Brady could be more of an option on the bench.
I think flyhalf is also a worry point. Hump is obviously the key man, but he is a bit injury prone at times. I would like to see Luke Marshall developed here a bit more, only with experience inside and outside him. He said himself he used to play flyhalf at school, and he has a good boot on him. I think ultimately his best position is 12, but making him able to play at 10 would help bring him more into the team. Jackson should also be given more game time next year.
I would also like to see more of Porter. THought he showed that he was pretty talented in the warm up games but would like to see him rotated more with Marshall to give him a bit more experience.
Starting team for Ulster next season looks something like this i would say:
During World Cup
1 - McAllister
2 - Kyriacou
3 - Fitzpatrick
4 - Muller (c)
5 - Tuohy/Barker
6 - Henry
7- Faloon
8- Wannenburg/Diack
9 - Marshall
10 - Hump
11 - Danielli/Gilroy
12 - Marshall
13 - Cave/Spence
14 - Gaston
15- Payne
Post World Cup
1- Court
2 - Best (c)
3 - Afoa
4 - Muller
5 - Tuohy
6 - Ferris
7- Faloon
8 - Wannenburg
9 - Pienaar
10 - Hump
11 - Danielli
12 - Wallace
13 - Cave/Spence
14 - Trimble
15 - Payne
I have to say the future is looking good!!

All well and good, but I have no doubt in my mind, after the WC Danielli wont be our first choice 11. Fully expect to see Gilroy make this shirt his own next season!by UlsterBok » Mon Apr 25, 2011 2:08 pm

Re: Squad for next year
Afoa might not be at the world cup given how other props NZ have are going.
Two Franks, Crockett, Woodcock, Schwalger, Tialata, Afoa and maybe even Somerville all going for 4 or 5 places.

On the other hand, he is versatile enough to play right across the front row. If he can throw the ball straight.
Re: Squad for next year
There is a chance he won't make it but I'm pretty sure his contract begins after the tournament. I think that was the announcement at the time he signed.earl the beaver wrote:Afoa might not be at the world cup given how other props NZ have are going.

Surely Touhy is a shoe in for the world cup squad?

He was to go to Scotland with Wolfhounds then rejoin main Ireland squad following week but injured his quad at Aironi match.Snipe Watson wrote:Was he not injured for the 6N?29xThePain wrote:You'd think so.
