The box is an area in behind the definding team, down the blinside. You have the defensive line, the touchline and the defending teams three quarters much further behind. The box kick is designed to hit the space in between, the box.

The box is an area within the 10 and the 5 metre line running parallel to the touch line thus any kick behind a a scrum or maul within that area which is meant to land within the same area ia a box kick. If the kick lands between the 2 10 metre lines it would be described as a kick in field. The closer the ball lands to the touch line and whose length allows the chasers to contest the ball the better the Box kick.

Murray has put up some extremely bad box kicks this 6 nations because his kicks have lacked the height to match the distance and the receivers have seldom been under severe pressure.

Garth Edwards was the scrum half who basically perfected the Box Kick prior to Edwards most scrum half were not play makers but solely a link between forwards and backs and the out half was the player who kicked for position from in field.

Edwards by use of the box kick advanced the chasers about 10 yards and wings and full backs were not used to being put under pressure when fielding kicks from the opposition.

On the opposition throw wings used to lie up in side the 5 metre line in the hope of putting pressure on the scrum half due to being unmarked with a free run at the scrum half but the Welsh protected Edwards who then hoisted the box kick into an undefended space. Changed the role of scrum half completely and the positioning of wings at the throw in. ( At that time 50-60s it was common practice for wings to throw the ball into the line out -- that changed with the box kick )

This tactic of screening seems to be making the box kick an ineffective tactic. Or more effective than it already is. It only has a chance of being effective if executed properly.

I was nowhere near thon book depository.

Btw, novices and younger members might like to peruse the archived postings of one Alex Adoo, late of this parish, before he sadly succumbed to terminal Mount Merrions.

Quality work and sorely missed :salut:
