More important is to WIN and get a quarter place -- and remember then that on any given day any given team may be beaten --home or away . 1999 once more.
Our European cup win record in 1999 was appalling.

Only won two matches iirc.
4 wins in the pool stage. Ebbw Vale 28-61 Ulster, Ulster 29-24 Toulouse, Ulster 43-18 Ebbw Vale and Edinburgh 21-23 Ulster. Also Ulster 38-38 Edinburgh and Toulouse 39-3 Ulster. 9 points total, no BP back then - 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw.

If La Rochelle are very French away from home, they will white flag and Exeter could score many tries. Only 6 points on the PD difference between Exeter and Toulouse, Toulouse will know what they have to do as they play last.

Those were in 1998 Neil >EW

Won 2 matches in January 99 (1998-99 season)

Lost all 4 matches later that year (and the remaining 2 pool matches in the new year - 1999-2000 season).

Maybe appalling is putting it strongly, given that the January wins brought us a cup, but from then on it went pear-shaped.

If it’s the difference between finishing 2nd or 3rd, will Toulouse go all out for it anyway, given a home qf either way? Of course any team tries to win by as much as possible but if 3rd secured i would imagine they may bring off key men and settle for that?

But they’ll wish to avoid Ulster of course.

Home country SF to be factored in. 1st and 2nd seeds have locked in home SF. Toulouse would probably prefer to play say Exeter in France rather than having to travel to England etc.

QF 1 1st v 8th
QF 2 4th v 5th
QF 3 3rd v 6th
QF 4 2nd v 7th

SF 1 Winner of QF 1 v QF 2
SF 2 Winner of QF 3 v QF 4

Higher seed has home country advantage. Seeds 1 and 2 guaranteed home game if they make SF. Impossible for Seeds 7 and 8 to get home game.

Heading into round 6 is Ulster the only team to have beaten one of the group leaders?

Tis true. Exeter and R92 were held to draws. Still not sure how JJ missed that DK v R92.

So to make it simple....

Toulouse win with try bonus and by 26 points or more - Exeter away
Any other Toulouse win - Toulouse away
Toulouse draw with try bonus - Toulouse away
Toulouse lose or draw with no try bonus - Clermont away

Looks very likely to be Exeter.

Would you prefer Toulouse or Exeter?
You've got to get your first tackle in early, even if it's late.
