"Why should a thrilling back movement, resulting in a try in the corner, have a much more difficult extra two points than one driven over near the posts after an attritional succession of short drives from rucks?"

“Having sat through the 30 30 draw....”
He can watch Sevens if he’s getting bored.
They’ll be wanting four day Test cricket next.

Agree with you Justin, fiddling around with what the game is founded upon is just wrong!
It used to be a try simply meant you got a chance at the posts to score, to lose conversions completely would be a travesty.
The beauty of a score is in the eye of the beholder. A tight head prop may see the 30 drives to gain that last inch and score much more beautiful than some skinny lad scoring in the corner. Where it is scored is the luck of the circumstance, it adds to the excitement of the game and the necessity for a world class kicker which is an art form in itself.

Do you wish to adopt the Americian approach or something like it -- "a drop kick" which must be taken on or behind the 22 with ball being passed to the kicker by the scrum half and the opposition allowed to charge as soon as the scrum half touches the ball .
Personally I would do away with Place kicks to be honest -- the success rate is now to high. In side the opposition half a penalty is now virtually an assured 3 points in the professional game. ( in normal weather conditions ) A pass and drop kick -- with charge on the first touch. -- kickers would then have to earn the MotM on the night rather than just being a successful place kicker.
there was a time when place kicks were less successful -- Wet leather Ball --sometimes misshaped set up a hunk of mud on a wet muddy pitch where the footing was unsure -- the place kick now is a time waster with prima donna posers going thought annoying routines and notices plastered behind the posts " silence respect the kicker ' etc
Why ? -- he practices Place kicks everyday -- do we silently watch someone trying to catch an up-n-under which is a far more nerve racking experience.
Do away with place kick penalties .

Of course, if we hadn't "fiddled about" with what the game was founded on, you would get zero points for a try if the conversion was missedUlsterNo9 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 12:15 pm Agree with you Justin, fiddling around with what the game is founded upon is just wrong!

That's why to me the conversion is sacrosanct.big mervyn wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 12:46 pmOf course, if we hadn't "fiddled about" with what the game was founded on, you would get zero points for a try if the conversion was missedUlsterNo9 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 12:15 pm Agree with you Justin, fiddling around with what the game is founded upon is just wrong!

That's how we got in this mess in the first place
Thon tosser that picked up the ball and started running with it has a lot to answer for.

Re: He has a point
I wish they would halve or more the amount of time the kicker gets to take a kick. I also hate referees giving front row coaching lessons. If it goes down blow the whistle and give a penalty which the kicker has to hurry up with.
Yes, that's me in the avatar!
Re: He has a point
scrums and forwards taking an age to set the fecking thing are ruining the game these days.
Re: He has a point
I don’t like paying to watch that but, on the other hand, my dad is very critical about the changes that have been made since he used to play when half of the games used to finish about 3 nil!

Happy to leave things as they are. Most players do what they can to score as close to the posts as possible so why not 'reward' that with an easier kick?
Re: He has a point
You can have a thrilling back move that results in a try under the posts. Or a pick n go in the corner.

Re: He has a point
This is probably the least of the issues with the laws/rules of the game presently, the biggest issue is that every team is pretty much playing the same gameplan.

Re: He has a point
The try scorer is the person who takes the place kick and within a 30 second clock.
Bonus point scoring zones are used in league nines. Trial bonus Try zones at each corner?
Four points for a drop goal from outside the opposition 10 metre line.
Tournaments introducing an Extra match bonus point for teams scoring six or more tries. Disappointed Shanghai Dave ended the game last night with a kick out from an attacking set piece at the opposition five line.

Re: He has a point
To make penalty points and conversion just that little bit harder -- the drop kick can not be the first kick of the ball -- and the first kick of either a conversion or penalty kick must be forward and the drop kicker must not be the first kicker of the ball.
Thus the Points available would scored from a tap kick forward and then pass to the drop kicker.
Such format would reduce the influence of referees on possible results based on dubious penalties.
My second change would be that players can not bind or be closer than arms length of a ball carrier before he is tackled .
This would nullify the tedious Lift and Blarge at the line using over sized front row combinations.
In reality this is actually just the application of outlawed" flying wedge ."
The current practice is of course a minimum a two man lunge which if it fails the supporting player then falls over the carrier to deny the opposition access to the ball . the only defence against the 5 metre game is the hope that the attacking ball carrier gets isolated and is penalised for not releasing or the carrier knocks on -- since referees are only watching for defending teams either going offside or failing to roll away.
Note a player bound to another before a tackle is actual blocking a potential tackle on a ball carrier.
To form a maul the Carrier must first be held by an opponent you can't FORM a maul unopposed.
In order not to over penalise the attacking side binding before the tackle would result in a scrum to defending team not a penalty kick.
