Ulster vs Glasgow Monday 9th of November 8.15pm

Post by Silverstu »

The Ulster match-day squad has been named to take on Glasgow Warriors in Round 5 of the Guinness PRO14 at Kingspan Stadium on Monday (kick-off 8.15pm).

There are eight changes to the side that defeated Cardiff Blues at Rodney Parade last Monday. Michael Lowry has been retained at full-back, with Matt Faddes and Craig Gilroy joining him in the back three. Luke Marshall – who returned last week from injury off the bench – will make his first start of the season, pairing with Stewart Moore in midfield. Ian Madigan has been selected at fly-half, with John Cooney starting at scrum-half.

Marcell Coetzee returns to the side and is joined in the back-row by Matty Rea – who made his 50th appearance for Ulster last week – and Sean Reidy. Sam Carter will lead the Ulster men from the second row and will partner Kieran Treadwell. Jack McGrath comes in to start at loosehead, with John Andrew being given the nod at hooker, and Marty Moore keeping the tighthead starting berth.

Eric O’Sullivan could make his 50th appearance for the province if called upon from the Ulster replacements. He is named alongside Adam McBurney, Gareth Milasinovich, Alan O’Connor and Marcus Rea in the forwards, while David Shanahan, Bill Johnston and Ethan McIlroy offer back line cover.

Squad PCR testing was clear.

Ulster team to play Glasgow Warriors, Guinness PRO14 Round 5, Monday 9 November 2020, at Kingspan Stadium (kick-off 8.15pm, live on Premier Sports):

(15-9) Michael Lowry, Craig Gilroy, Luke Marshall, Stewart Moore, Matt Faddes, Ian Madigan, John Cooney;

(1-8) Jack McGrath, John Andrew, Marty Moore, Kieran Treadwell, Sam Carter (Capt.), Matty Rea, Sean Reidy, Marcell Coetzee.

Replacements: Adam McBurney, Eric O’Sullivan, Gareth Milasinovich, Alan O’Connor, Marcus Rea, David Shanahan, Bill Johnston, Ethan McIlroy.

Good to see Rea Jr and McIlroy on the bench and looking forward to Marshall and Stewart in midfield, not wild about Carter as captain ..

Serious question. How does Carter end up with the captaincy? Do they just raffle it out each week?

He previously captained the Brumbies....so presumably has leadership qualities.

Anyway...in Dan, I trust.

And, unless I’m mistaken, he’s the only one in that fifteen who’s captained Ulster before.

Best position on the pitch to find a Captain second row . Back rows are too busy and are penalty prone . Front rows frequently are normally too slow with brains to match , Wings and backs generally are to removed from the coal face to understand the problems .

The advantage of the second row is most refs have to look up to talk to them . Its a bit like a telling a a policeman to f-off. It doesn't seem like the wisest thing to do when you look up at second row. You don't want to do it too often. The converse is also true he may turn the ref into Napoleon if he comes across too hard.

Basically the 3 ideal positions for a Captain are second row --scrum half and out half .

Although the modern game is about leadership teams rather than Captains -- the Captain is just the spokesperson with a casting vote and final say.

Always wary of playing a team after they have played leinster. No better training environment than facing the champions when everything is done under pressure.

Nig is the only ref in the world who doesn't call a yellow there.
