drop goals
is it my imagination, or have drop goals disappeared from top flight rugby this season. And if so, why? Rumn must have a theory
And Merv, can you tell us when the last UR dropped goal was?
and more difficult, when was the last unsuccessful attempt?

Re: drop goals
Some great questions!
Davy Hump used to like a few. Didn't I Hump drop a long one at Thomond Park in the 2012 qf win at Munster?
Can't remember any more recent ones.
Top 3 memorable ones at international level :-
Jonny Wilkinson 2003 rwc final
Johnny Sexton in Paris 2018
Jannie de Beer - was it 5 against england in the 99 qf?

Re: drop goals
Think it was Bledisloe Cup Game 1 this year which finished in a draw, both the Kiwis and Aussies had plenty chance to win game with simple drop goal, but only thought about scoring a try.
Re: drop goals
It used to be a thing in Irish rugby. ROG was the king. Sexton in 2018 against France was one of the best in recent memory. Could be a stats thing where someone has looked at the data and percentage wise they're not worth it so much.
I have my own tv channel, what have you got?

Re: drop goals
I think Ulster's last drop goal was Paddy Jackson against Exeter in 2016. Happy to be corrected.

Re: drop goals
There's a fella on twatter called Brendon Shields who will be looking at the success rate of sides in drop goal territory (a ruck two metres either side of the posts and inside the 22) four phases after entry to the drop goal territory during the 2021 Six Nations.Dave wrote:It used to be a thing in Irish rugby. I love a wee drop goal but I suspect the results will work against it otherwise more teams would try it. It should be interesting either way.

Re: drop goals
My ten cents
Nice question BobbyThere was, however, time for one final restart, which Ulster, just as the Dragons had done seconds earlier, managed to secure and build upon. Aggressive running from Pienaar in particular brought the Ulstermen to within kicking distance of the posts, but with Jackson off and Pienaar momentarily at the bottom of a pile of bodies after releasing the ball, there was no recognisable kicker available. Ulster intelligently held fire, recycling well until the scrum-half was in position, and his strike was the sweetest of the night, as the drop goal edged Ulster to victory.

Re: drop goals
Pretty sure PJ's last gasp winner v Exeter was the last successful one alright.
Was Bill Johnson's last ditch attempt v Ospreys in Feb this year the last unsuccessful one?
Last one scored against Ulster was Camille Lopez for Clermont last January.
The previous one was Duncan Weir to clinch that dramatic 17-16 win for Embra at Ravenhill in Feb 2018.

He did, but McGlock made him clean it up himself.

Did Bill Johnston miss one against Cheatahs last season?

Re: drop goals
And of course Ruan scored a last gasp winner against Dragons(???) but I think that was prior to 2012. He scored last gasp winners in three consecutive matches, but IIRC the other two were penalties.
