Ulster MOTM v Ospreys

Post by fermain »

Poor start to the 1st half, but they came back for a score at the end, then in the 2nd, kicked on, but too many small errors and not enough killer instinct (especially with a man advantage) to take the Ospreys apart and get the bonus point.

Nick Timoney got the official MoTM, but who was yers?

Reidy was superb in second half, but overall, I think Timoney was immense and gave such a boost with his break before halftime to feed Cooney for the try. Not often I agree with official MotM, but I do tonight.

I gave it to Lyttle because he deserves something from the game. The boy is some finisher.

Fast Nick for me. Rob 2nd. Both locks joint last - just wasn’t impressed by them tonight.

One thing that annoyed me tonight was Ulster reluctance to try to poach and turnover. We did a few but Ospreys were getting a lot of change from jackaling all game.

Timoney at full pelt is frightening. Would love to see us getting him clean through more often.

Treadwell had a few good carries but missed a few tackles. AOC is a grafter and got through a ton of work. He was top tackler. I think both will be superceded by Izzy at some point. Big athletic, powerful unit with great hands.

Nick was the standout player of an overall poor team performance. Even wee Mikey made too many errors ( unlike him) , and Mads was good but not good enough. Stockdale played well (albeit mainly in defence) - might have got into his stride a bit better had he been given the opportunity in the second half. Honourable mention for Reidy who had a stormer - great to see him back and in form.
Hope is not a strategy.

Timoney for me too.
Lowry looks more and more like a 10 in waiting. He always looks for space, granted he can run up a blind alley or two, but his instincts are good.
Rob Baloucoune looked hungry and Sean Reidy looked industrious as always.

Three points:
I'd like to have seen both Stockdale and Baloucoune getting a full game but obviously a half each was the right choice.
We could be looking at a serious back row for next year.
Hard to look past Timoney for MOTM

R Baloucoune for me not that he had a sparkling performance but because he was the player I watched most closely to see if his injury had affected his game --and with so much at stake I consider he played as well as the circumstances allowed him.

The rest of the players in the first half defended well but it was a team effort rather than an individual one but none of the backs performed well ball in hand.On the first half performance only one player achieved something above the rest Timoney but is a single run worthy of title MOTM ? A Match is 80 -- for some players 40+ minutes --- not 30 seconds . ?

He provided the Moment of the Match but like the most players the first half was a team effort ofd success and failure improved upon in the second.
