He hasn’t played since January, will he have match fitness and not be rusty. It’s taken him a few games in past to go through gears.
Be harsh to drop either O’Connor or Treadwell.

Interesting call Rocky, Hendy isn't as mobile as what he was, I now feel he's an out and out lock. On the flip side you've a very mobile lock in Treadwell which could offset and balance the pack out if we went down your way of thinking.rocky wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 11:43 amWould like to see the locks retained with Hendy at 6.launish116 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 6:16 pm Even if Carter is cleared to play.

That's a more than decent shout Rocky. Hendy brings a level of aggression that few can match. Granted he's not as mobile as he was, but he has the guile and bad intention do be very destructive at the breakdown. playing 6 may be less draining on his resources too giving him more opportunity to bring his particular brand of brutal clearing out. It would be hard on Reidy or Timoney to drop to the bench as they've been great, but Hendy is the man.rocky wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 11:43 amWould like to see the locks retained with Hendy at 6.launish116 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 6:16 pm Even if Carter is cleared to play.

Re: Ulster in the Challenge Cup
The players who have played in the back row this year for Ulster all work well together why introduce someone else into the back row now.
I have also noticed Ulsters tackle technique has changed as have English Premiership clubs to compensate for the new referring application of the laws . This makes for a more open game and that will suit the Ulster backline. Breakdown will be important but as usual the game will be lost or won in the front row and 9 /10 performance. It will be lively no doubt lets hope for a useful ref and not Murphy or Barnes.

The saints back row are as physical if not more so than the tigers and We managed to cope with it once we sorted the attitude at half time. The 3 starting BR deserve another run out with hendo to start at lock for me. Our starting BR also bring a great link game and are able to keep up with play seeking offloads which is the game we want to play.

It will be an attritional contest. No harm having AOC to come on for impact. We will need Hendy scrummaging in the tight head lock position. Ellis 'I don't clap' Genge and Uncle Albert will provide a stiff opposition in the scrum.

Re: Ulster in the Challenge Cup
If there was a scenario in which Hendy, Carter, AOC and Treadwell were all fit and firing, might it make sense to try Treadwell at #6 instead of Hendy (in a safe / less important match) ? On the basis that Henderson is more of a specialist 2nd row nowadays and Treadwell is fast enough to play BR. Has Treadwell ever played #6 ?
Re: Ulster in the Challenge Cup
Why not try Big Stu in there?
Re: Ulster in the Challenge Cup
My suggestion years ago against Glasgow as a Sub when Ulster were in dire need of a ball carrier to get over the gain line. At the moment no unless Marshall was available at 12. In the Rainbow "Gamefiller" Cup maybe but Ulster need an experienced Backline for the Challenge Cup --There are times to experiment and times you play the tried and tested.
Within this carapace of skepticism there lives an optimist

Re: Ulster in the Challenge Cup
Is treadwell a better 6 than Murphy, reidy or timoney? If not then we should leave him to fight for a second row spot. IMO he is an excellent impact sub if all the others are fit.wanderer wrote:If there was a scenario in which Hendy, Carter, AOC and Treadwell were all fit and firing, might it make sense to try Treadwell at #6 instead of Hendy (in a safe / less important match) ? Re: Ulster in the Challenge Cup
Treadwell was tried at 6 early in his Ulster career. He has good straight line speed but lacks the mobility to get from ruck to ruck. He's prone to missing a tackle or two. Ulster backrows will often have a high tackle count as the ball is kicked often. We will need 3 strong 2nd rows including the bench option.

Re: Ulster in the Challenge Cup
Absolutely correct. Treadwell is a second row and doesn't have the game to play 6. Hendy has the experience at 6 to get the job done and I like the idea of getting best players on the pitch and on the bench. Hendy at 6 would achieve that goal. Someone would have to drop to the bench, probably Reidy, but that would create a much stronger bench option than we had last time out.Dave wrote: ↑Wed Apr 21, 2021 1:45 pm Treadwell was tried at 6 early in his Ulster career. No need to put an oval peg in a round hole.
Treadwell and Rea would offer decent impact off the bench.
