The reality is of course that it won’t make a great deal, if any, difference but it’s a welcome distraction and an opportunity for some kids to get their bake photographed next to the cup which can’t be a bad thing.

Still a few games to win yet though.

Wide-angle lens ... socially distanced of course.

But then we have been socially distanced from silverware since 2006, so no change there then.

A challenge cup for UR would be a great progression achievement without doubt - bearing in mind the rebuild over the last few yrs.
I definitely think that would be a fillip for the current squad, and definitely for the younger players & home grown/both.
I’d genuinely love it for all the hard work that’s gone in over last 3 yrs. Also I genuinely think it’d benefit the squads mindset.

Of note the recent job advertisements were for academy manager & player development (forwards specialist) - SID & pack (Sid too) is URs Achilles heal. We are definitely 1/2 backrows short & simply struggle to field a strong 2nd row. Carter has been a disappointment injury wise & IH simply doesn’t feature enough. The pack lacks power - a decent meaty pack or top end Euro club causes us issues. At Ravenhill with a crowd we’d turn over everyone bar 4/5 sides in Europe - but simply we are fundamentally currently flawed.
Inter pro moves are a mere sticking plaster - added gametime maybe - but internationals?...no, form is not rewarded. Moore, cooney, Murphy - no games. Why would a young Leinster pup move if despite missing out on top Leinster games still has an Ire shout?
Simply we cannot rely on inter pro moves, we need to develop our own. Have we really made the most of that in last 15 yrs? Is there not AIL club forwards from farmer stock out in the counties?
We need another BR next yr as well as McCann - maybe young Rea. We are still playing catch up, maybe 18mths pack wise.

I could well be wrong but I can't think of any team bar Leinster in the last 10-15 years who have won this and then gone on to win either their domestic league or the champions cup. And with Leinster it was an aberration that season.
Last week's victims won this in 10-11 then the Prem in 11-12, then fell away a bit.

:banghead: Sweet fack. It’s bad enough the southern media already trying to get digs in and belittle it now Ulster have a sniff at it, but from our own......!!!!!!

Close one to call, normally I'd say home advantage would sway it, but with no fans it's not really much at all, good luck.

The announcement of the teams will be telling. I don't know if the Saints have a big enough squad to rotate and still produce a competitive team. They play London Irish the following weekend. That might effect their planning as both teams would be in the same boat. If Hendy is fit I would back Ulster to win but if not it will still be a good contest.

It could well come down to who wants it more. In fact it will.
What is the Saints priority going to be this weekend? It's unlikely to be the second tier European tournament. Locking down their league position would be paramount if I were them.
Ulster have nothing else of any importance to think about.

Tend to agree. I think Saints are too much in the fight for League playoffs and prioritising league position will likely qualify them for HC next year anyhow so if there’s a call to be made by the staff I sense a weaker XV but perhaps not the 2nds. Maybe a 1.5XV and see what happens and if they beat Ulster to progress to semis they will give it full attention.

The game is Ulsters to lose.

Big Stu has a good take on the competition. The goal has changed and they would love to win it. Simple as.

Still baffled by one question can't make head nor tail of it.

If saints front liners were missing last week I'd expect some of them to get game time this week. Wouldn't put it past them to start the same team that beat the dragons but load the bench with experience. If they are in with a sniff with 30 to go then they will go for it.
