Half decent game - too many errors and penalties so little flow. In saying that, the intensity was fairly high, with hard running and some good tackles. Thought the Leinster backline had a lot of potential but just made mistakes at crucial moments. I thought Henry and Webb had decent games and was it Hallett playing 10? - looked decent too and our fullback was very keen to make runs.
Not a bad evenings entertainment but was hoping for a couple of better individual performances from the men in white.

Yes, Hallett played 10 for us. Felt he had more length from hand than from the tee. Consequently I was suprised when he went for the penalty just inside their half but fairly straight on. He had missed a few shorter ones earlier but from wide.

FT score was 11-6 BTW (HT 8-3)

Try by McKenzie and 2 penalties by Hallett to 2 penalties.

McCrea (15), McKenzie (14), Cochrane (11) and Woods (9) were also worth a mention in the backline.

I was watching one of our players warming up. About all I could see were his ankles and I assumed him to be a big flying winger - very thin ankles like a thoroughbred. He came on as our tighthead replacement - Voisey (17). He is a man of 2 halves - top and bottom.

Ulster 'A' 11 - 6 Leinster 'A'
4 April 2008, 8:44 pm
By Lyndsey Irwin
Ulster A noticed up a hard won victory against Leinster A at Ravenhill on Friday evening, winning 11-6 with winger Paul McKenzie getting the game's only try...
Ulster opened the scoring with a penalty from out-half Kieran Hallett after three minutes on a cracking evening for rugby at Ravenhill - the flood lights not needed until well into the second half of the game.

The Malone man missed a difficult kick after 12 minutes as the game opened up, but just two minutes later, the hosts scored the only try of the night when Paul McKenzie showed good handling skills on the end of a Darren Cave pass and touched down in the corner. Hallett’s conversion was wide of the upright but Ulster A were 8-0 in front.

The visitors rallied and were rewarded with a penalty but Ian Keatley’s 27th minute penalty hit the left upright though the out-half reduced the deficit to five points, 8-3, with a successful strike just before the break on 37 minutes. Ulster A 8 - 3 Leinster A

The game stayed tight throughout the second half. Keatly added another 3 points from the boot on the 50 minute mark but with 10 minutes to play the visitors were penalised inside their half and Hallett kicked the penalty to push Ulster A 11-6 ahead at the final whistle.

Next Friday the Senior Squad are back in action with the most important game of the season against Connacht. Matt Williams wants to continue the quest to turn Ravenhill back into a fortress and has said that if supporters make it to only one game this season, the crucial match against Connacht, kick off 6.30pm should be it! Tickets for the Main Stand are now sold out but there is still good availability on the promenade and terrace - donn't miss it!

McKenzie was the stand-out player for me in both defense and attack.

Personally I thought he was the original grey man. But it is hard to tell from behind the camera as you tend to miss most of the game.

Would also add that the starting scrum half (Woods?) was as agressive in attack and defence as any of the back-row forwards and deserves a special mention for his performance tonight.

needs to work on his passing though - some passes were absolutely attrocious!! However, he was very physical with ball in hand and was quick to the breakdown to keep things moving.

Was at the match last night, and in spite of the worst referee i have seen all season it was a very enjoyable match. Stand out players were Mark McCrea, Paul McKenzie, Declan Fitzpatrick, and Chris Henry. Definitely think Henry deserves to be on the bench this Friday against Connacht providing his injury has cleared up. Thought Declan Fitzpatrick coped really well with Cian Healy in the scrum, with a bit more coaching Fitzy has all the makings of being a good tight-head prop. Mark McCrea played well at full-back was safe under the high ball, made some good breaks and showed lots of strength breaking tackles. Paul McKenzie was good in defence with one outstanding hit just before half time on a Leinster winger, and he finished of a well worked move by the Ulster team, diving over for the only try of the game. Henry was his usual committed self, plenty of communicating with his team leading and directing from the front, gets through an awful lot of work which largely goes unnoticed. Was disappointed in the supposed big 2 that where playing Dewey and Webb, you expect man of the match displays from these 2 but they have failed to deliver yet again playing for Ulster. Overall a good night and the crowd was, considering it was an 'A' fixture, excellent. Thought the Leinster No.4 Devin Toner was their best player with most if not all of their line-outs going to him, ( should check out his availability as we probably need 2 line-out specialists for next season)

You'd expect Toner to get a lot of ball in the line out. He is reputedly 6'10" but like Harrison is easy to bring down. This was the first oportunity for me to see Grant Webb and I thought he and the rest of the back row were very good together. The defence was excellent and kept the line clear of several concerted Leinster attacks. Overall a very good performance from the A team with a lot of committment being shown from 1 to 15.

I thought Webb played very well at 7, snaffling on the ground and putting in some big hits. Our backrow as a whole played well. Though Hallet at was poor at 10. McKenzie was excellent on the wing.

Thought the game was enjoyable, and played with a lot of commitment.

McKenzie and McCrea were both excellent although McCrea certainly more comfortable on the wing in attacking situations, i dont remember him really hitting the line from fullback.

Woods has a dangerous break, big tackler but some woeful passing.

Hallet had a mixed bag. Good kicking from hand but some of his cross kicks were very poor. Displayed a range of passing - high, low, behind the man, and the occasional good flat pass in front of the runner.

Dewey was awful, could have been anybody and certainly not the player i watched play Ireland at Murrayfield last summer.

Up front Deccie Fitz and Chris Henry stood out as players who wanted to prove something. Maybe they were trying to prove something, but Henry looked hungry for work and Deccie scrummaged well against Healy and forced a couple of turnovers through counter rucking.

Webb was fairly poor i thought he meandered about a lot especially in the 2nd half with his jersey hanging out and looking awfully clean.

Always amazed at peoples different perceptions of players performance.

I thought Hallett had a good game and kept the pack going forward when possible and Anderson was the stand out in the match wining back row for me.
