Wiehahn Herbst signs for Ulster

[tag=image]http://www3.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Wieh ... ucD18m.jpg[/tag][tag=content]Ulster Rugby have announced the signing of Sharks tighthead prop Wiehahn Herbst for next season on a three-year deal.

25-year old Herbst will arrive at the end of the Natal Sharks’ Vodacom Cup campaign and will replace John Afoa in the Ulster squad.

It is likely that Herbst will come as a project with a view to becoming Irish qualified in 2017 with Jared Payne able to play for Ireland in September.

Herbst has made his debut for the Sharks in 2009 and has played 37 Super Rugby matches for the Natal-based side, as well as playing for their Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup teams.

The Klerksdorp-born prop represented South Africa at under-19 and under-20 levels, however he has never represented the Springboks at international level.

“Ulster Rugby is a Province on the up and for me it was just a great opportunity to develop my career and to take it to the next level,” Herbst commented.

“The team is doing extremely well at the moment and with the stadium being redeveloped there is a great set-up at Ravenhill – it will be exciting to be part of.”

Director of Rugby at Ulster David Humphreys said he was very happy to have revealed the second Ulster signing for the 2014/15 season.

“I am delighted that Wiehahn has decided to join Ulster. He is a highly talented young player with a proven track-record in a specialist position.

“I have no doubt that he will be a huge success at the Province and that he will follow in the footsteps of the other overseas players that have come to Ravenhill in making a major contribution to the success of Ulster Rugby.”
