Match Report: Glasgow Warriors 32-10 Ulster Rugby

[tag=image]http://www.shawlandsacademy.glasgow.sch ... rriors.jpg[/tag][tag=content]Ulster’s much-changed side were subject to a second half onslaught from the Glasgow Warriors and eventually fell 32-10 in their Guinness PRO12 clash at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday.

In an ironic twist, the result, combined with the Ospreys’ inability to get a bonus point away to Connacht, means that these two sides will contest next week’s semi-final on Friday night at the same venue.

Finn Russell put in a man-of-the-match performance and capped it off with two tries, as well as adding twelve points from the boot while Stuart Hogg and Richie Vernon also crossed the whitewash to cap off a comeback from the hosts.

A Chris Henry try and an Ian Humphreys penalty put Ulster 10-6 up at the interval, but their changed side eventually ran out of steam and could not muster any points in a second period where they played into a gale force wind.

Russell got his side off to the perfect start after just five minutes when he slotted over a straightforward penalty when Ulster were caught offside.

The wind was playing havoc with Glasgow’s attempts to get out of their own half, however they commanded most of possession and were keeping their visitors relatively quiet.

Ulster were then dealt a hammer blow when the ever-reliable Franco van der Merwe limped off through injury midway through the half, with the Springbok lock looking in considerable pain.

Having the wind at their backs was helping Ulster greatly and they began to put pressure on their hosts and eventually referee Ian Davies lost his patience with Glasgow’s frequent infringing and sent Jonny Gray to the bin.

That extra man paid off for the Irish province as a driving maul piled over the line just before the half hour mark with Chris Henry taking the plaudits for the score.

The two sides traded penalties before half-time to take the score at the interval to 6-10.

It took fourteen minutes for the game to spark into life after the break and it was a clever chip kick down the line from Stuart Hogg that sent the Scottish full-back over in the corner to put the hosts back in front.

Russell missed the touchline conversion to leave the score at 11-10, but five minutes later the fly-half made up for it by scrambling over for a try of his own under the posts, bouncing Paul Marshall out of the way to get the try.

With Glasgow knowing by now that four tries was needed to get a home semi-final back to Scotstoun, their task was made considerably easier when Ulster prop Andrew Warwick was sin binned for a cynical infringement in the 63rd minute.

With the extra man it was simply a formality for Russell to nab his second try of the game with ten minutes to play, taking advantage of the wide overlap to cross for Glasgow’s third score.

And the bonus point try was also a formality when Richie Vernon picked a superb line through the tired Ulster defence and cruised over for the fourth try that ensured this game will be replayed in six days’ time.
