Just watched NZ against Tonga. Couldn't sit through it to the end.

Where's the fun in watching a weakened side get stuffed?
How many South Sea Islanders are now playing for NZ? One of the commentators mentioned some players being told by their agents not to play. The whole thing smells bad. I've no problem with players moving round the world to earn a better living but essentially stealing players from already impoverished nations is shameful. Or maybe they're all Maori, in which case, my argument falla. Interesting to see Finlay the Scot playing for NZ.
Worst of all, that piped music at every break in play. I remember they tried it at Ravenhill a few seasons ago. If they try it again, I'm staying at home to watch, with the sound turrned off.

With all the quarantine issues they were never going to compete. New Zealand have no chill in these situations. The top tier nations are always in a superior position. Tonga rarely have all their best players together for any length of time. I would like to see players being able to switch allegiance back to Tonga and other island nations. It has been far too easy for players to manufacture eligibility to tier 1 national sides. Hopefully the new Pacific Island team in super rugby will take off.
I have my own tv channel, what have you got?

True, Aki for one of course. Still doesn't make up for stripping the islands of their best talent. Would Aki or any of the other exports have made the All Blacks?

What talent do they strip the islands of?

Which players (out of all the talented All Blacks and Junior All Blacks) were imported to play rugby?

Supplementary questions: How many players get scholarships, but don't make that level? How many kiwis with island heritage are developed, but don't make the NZ team?

In the current squad of 40...
Akira Ioane Samoan extraction via Japan
Angus Ta’avao Samoan extraction
Asafo Aumua Samoan extraction
David Halivi Tongan extraction
George Bower Fijian extraction
Hoskins Sotutu Fijian extraction
Karl Tu’inukuafe Tongan extraction
Nepo Lualala Born in Samoa
Ofa Tu’ungafasi Tongan extraction
Patrick Tuipulotu Tongan extraction
Richie Mo’unga Samoan/Tongan extraction
Sevu Reece Born in Fiji
Shannon Frizell Born in Tonga
Tupou Vaa'I Tongan Extraction

3 born outside NZ; 11 parents born outside NZ (not absolutely sure about that)

So it's just a coincidence that just over a third of the squad have Pacific Island heritage (and a Scot  ) ? Could be, I suppose.
Having said all that, there is absolutely no reason why people shouldn't move to better themselves, so I guess it's just life.

It would be interesting to know how many lads come to NZ on rugby scholarships then returrn to theor home countire to play for them. If there are a lot, it would somewhat speak against my argument, although the best would still be creamed off for the All blacks.

Got this today:

ALL FOR ONE | 130 Years of the Lions in South Africa

A new story by Michael Charton:

The British and Irish Lions represent the last of the traditional tours on the rugby calendar. Springbok rugby fans recognise, intuitively, that there is something very special about playing them. A magic, for which we have waited twelve long years.

ALL FOR ONE sets out to discover the basis of this magic by looking back at the thirteen previous Lion's tours to South Africa: the characters; the contests; the politics; and the moments, all of which have been woven into one of the most layered rivalries in sport.

The story is approximately 60 minutes via Zoom and has been produced with both South African and British+Irish rugby enthusiasts in mind.

The premier will be on Friday evening at 6pm (SA time). And for those who will be out celebrating our new freedom, there will be another performance on Saturday at 4pm as a lead-up to the second test. Please forward on to anyone you think might enjoy.

Tickets are R100 (£5) per person.
