Mismatch in height is not a mitigating circumstance. Mismatches happen all over the park - it is up to the tackler to do so safely.
rumncoke wrote:... the Australian player starts low and stays low , the Australian player turns his shoulder into the Irish player his arm seems to guide the Irish players arm upwards ...
Which was the point I was making - if his arm guided the Irish player's arm upwards, it was presumably because there was contact to do that. It appeared to me that first contact was on the shoulder, not the neck as the officials maintained. I.E. (that being the case) it was a high tackle, but not deserving anything more than yellow at most. The fact that a disciplinary panel saw fit to not add any other sanction suggests to me they saw it the same way.
rumncoke wrote:... the Irish player quickly removes his arm after contact.
Irrelevant - once contact has been made (wherever that may have been), it cannot be unmade. If it was dangerous, it was dangerous. If it wasn't dangerous, it wasn't dangerous. Pulling one's arm away quickly after the event won't change what has already happened.
rumncoke wrote:The problem was the referee had already penalised Australia twice for high tackles and my feeling was he felt he had to stop high contact ...
Really? That's a problem?
A referee who wants to stop high contact? Whatever will they think of next?
rumncoke wrote:To what extent the card influenced the result --in my opinion not to a great extent ....
You're entitled to your opinion .. even if it is wrong.
15 v 14 will inevitably have an effect on any match with the 14 having to do far more work, and even if they maintain parity for a long time in the match, or close to it, the last 10-20 minutes are usually the killer. Remind me again when Australia finally broke down the Irish defence for the decisive scores ...

Capt the mismatch in size would be a mitigating circumstance if the player is ducking — the Aussie was ducking — it is mitigating due to fact it increases the effect of ducking and makes more likely for the contact to be high .

The withdrawal is indication that the contact was purely accidental and the player tried to minimize any injury .

As I stated I think the red was based on the fact it was the third high and I think had an Australian had gone thereafter he to would have seen red.

I don’t deny 14 v 15 can be exhausting but the trys scored were text book make a break - pass and support and similar to those scored by England when playing against 15 .

Where the man disadvantage counted was in Ireland’s in ability to score when inside the red zone with only 7 forwards against 8 which was were they beat England .

Tuned in for the second half and the most entertainment came from reading the sub-titles.

"Island" just didn't perform in the second half.

Left a few extra points out there. "Tuna up the captain*" seemed satisfied though. :thumleft:

Left winger Russell will not look back on a couple of opportunities in second half with much joy.

* Turner, the captain

Mummy, why is the strange man still talking?

I've told him before he is entitled to his opinion, even if it is wrong.

Why does he have to keep on about it?

Almost forgot - one of the best ones was when the ref was giving the pre-scrum instructions and got to "SET"

Try saying that with a South African accent (with maybe the hint of an "H" in there) and bear in mind that the sub-titles work phonetically with what they pick up ... Oh, and they must also have a word-censor.

"GROUCH, TOUCH ... CRAP!"

Happened a few times.

EDIT: Or is it Grouch, Bind ... whatever? Too distracted by the "CRAP" to remember.

Only watched the first half .

Same tactical game big boot down the pitch into the red zone .

McCann looked good going forward but the Irish defense was leaky on a number of occasions and hard to decide as to wether it individual weakness or collective failure of a plan ?
