Tbh even though the selections of individual players were a problem in this match / tournament, and few players showed up, it wasn’t the main problem - the main problem was Schmidt and his coaches. He came off the back of an amazing year, and just seems to have been incredibly complacent - key half-backs unfit and out of form? Stick them out there, sure we just beat the all blacks.. England reading our gameplan like a book and monstering us? Let’s stick with it - sure we’ve only lost 3 of our last 25...

It’s really weird reading about his post-match interviews recently - he’s either in full-on bunker mentality, in denial about what’s happening - or else he has basically given up, knowing he is packing it in soon, and he doesn’t have the hunger any more. No signs of introspection or acknowledgment that he’s done nothing wrong - apparently after the Wales game the list of culprits contained the weather, a mysterious ‘bug’, the ref, the Irish press for leaking / guessing the team a day early, but not him... and following it on Twitter, he said ‘Ireland will definitely be competitive at the WC’. oh well, if it’s ‘definite’ I guess that’s fine then...

Ireland are now a bit like France - things have gone horribly pear shaped, but it’s too late to do anything but cross fingers and hope.. it’s a weird one - he was always supposed be be a brilliant technical coach, ruthless on the details, ruthless on small errors - I just fear that the fight has gone out of him, and you have to wonder if that’s going to turn around..

The fight certainly went out of the team after about 5 mins. I think the only players to put a half-decent performance in were Ryan and Conan when he came in. That has to be SOB’s last international. Stander was strong against France, but he was nowhere on Sat, and POM was AWOL - I’m surprised that Ruddock hasn’t got starts given his form for Leinster. Half-backs less said the better, and Aki is one of my favourite players, but he’s been really off-colour, and again it’s not like there aren’t options (McCloskey, C Farrell, T Farrell as well as Scannell all playing well)

England and Wales came out with a game plan that worked from the off with Ireland being 7 points down and chasing a game after 5 minutes. Against Scotland Sexton came off when Ireland had a sound lead after 24 minutes and Carberry fouled up to the point Aki seemed to be playing outhalf in the second period . Thereafter Carberry was declared Injured. and Carty was drafted to the bench. --International experience = zero.

The Irish backline against the English was an experiment which went wrong, against an English experimental attack which licked. The Welsh game was a try apiece game -with "homer penalties" the difference between the sides.

Joe recognises problems -- no experienced reliable back-up at out half and a first choice scrum half out of form . But both games lost were games where the Initial early score was the major factor against two teams who specialise in defending.

Joe has an experienced eye and understanding as to why Ireland lost and while another grand slam would have been nice from Joe's point of view . He has possible learnt more from this 6 nations by not winning it than he would have by winning it.

All post match interviews are a sham -- an opportunity to spout the same old cliches -- the truth is saved for Monday morning.

A “homer penalty” is a penalty awarded which may not be awarded to a team if they were playing away .

Frequently they are 50 / 50 calls made on unintentional or accidental infringements and even on occasions totally incorrectly eg scrum offences - players unable to roll away after a tackle . Examples of intentional penalties — coming in from the side — pulling a maul down - deliberate offsides - mid field - blocking
Accidental — premature runs or advances in response to scrum half lifting some off your feet calls etc

Generally they arise from referees who tend to look for visiting teams offences such a failure roll away and off side many of the infringements are seldom worthy of three points That come from the penalty awarded .

Reflections on Saturday at the moment Stockdale is too nice in my opinion

On the kick off he shouldn’t have caught the ball but let go into touch . The Welsh kick off was inch perfect and Liam Williams was up fast to target Stockdale into touch if he caught the ball giving the Welsh an early line out inside the 22 .

On his first run after he was tackled the Welsh scrum half came in late when was already in touch — no protestation from Stockdale — he did exactly the same on Aki who reacted and got a penalty reversed .

Stockdale has to learn that nice gets abused and exploited

Liam

FO since if your for real your the complete opposite of

The score line last week was the result of a half hearted game after the 3rd try and Murray’s injury

But the score was down to Aki as than to Stockdale when left marking 2 or 3 players

They decided to play as 15 individuals in the first half. They'll get it right next time...
