Skipping the Irish Open in County Clare to play the Scottish Open the following week to give himself in theory the best preparation of winning at Royal Portrush, all seems very sensible - so yes he will take heat for it on social media from the usual idiots etcShan wrote:I see Rory McIlroy is not playing the Irish Open this year. That will most likely generate a lot of whinging, most of which will be from folk with no interest in golf.

R&A admit concerns for Open in Portrush due to Brexit
https://www.rte.ie/sport/golf/2019/0226 ... to-brexit/R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers admits he will pleased when this year's Open Championship at Royal Portrush is over after revealing the "significant concern" being caused by Brexit.
Portrush will stage the Open for the first time since 1951 from 18-21 July and tickets for the championship days at the Northern Irish venue have already sold out.
However, that decision was announced in October 2015, eight months before the referendum to leave the European Union, and the continuing uncertainty surrounding Brexit - and in particular the backstop to retain an open border on the island of Ireland - is causing headaches for golf's governing body.
"Like every business, and I think about the Open as such, the lack of certainty about the rules, the law in which we are operating under post-March 29 has caused us significant concern," Slumbers said.
"In hindsight would I be wanting to do Portrush in the year that we would be potentially leaving the European Union without a deal? No.

Aye - it's moved him up from 257 in the world rankings to 133.Neill_M wrote:McDowell has won on the PGA Tour. The Corales Championship (for those not in the matchplay)
The win guarantees his tour card for another 2 years, but he's still got a bit of work to do to make it to Portrush for The Open in the summer (unless someone wants a caddy with good local knowledge).
Rory has moved up another place in the rankings to 3 (from 8 at start of the year).
