Isn't Norn Iron classy? A convincingly sharp suit and a brass neck, mix with a few friends in the right places - politics, the masons the orange order and of course be a churchgoer, an underhand deal or two and you can knock out a great ould life for yourself at other people's expense, but then why give a single good goddamn about little people, screw them, you only get one life. You can even do all of the above under a cloak of respectability if you aren't a mug. Right?

Some rob you with a six gun, some with a fountain pen.***

I still can't wait to get the fûck outta Dodge. Roll on 2017.

*** with thanks to Woody Guthrie

If you'll gather 'round me, children,
A story I will tell
'Bout Pretty Boy Floyd, an outlaw,
Oklahoma knew him well.

It was in the town of Shawnee,
A Saturday afternoon,
His wife beside him in his wagon
As into town they rode.

There a deputy sheriff approached him
In a manner rather rude,
Vulgar words of anger,
An' his wife she overheard.

Pretty Boy grabbed a log chain,
And the deputy grabbed his gun;
In the fight that followed
He laid that deputy down.

Then he took to the trees and timber
Along the river shore,
Hiding on the river bottom
And he never come back no more.

Yes, he took to the trees and timber
To live a life of shame;
Every crime in Oklahoma
Was added to his name.

But a many a starvin' farmer
The same old story told
How the outlaw paid their mortgage
And saved their little homes.

Others tell you 'bout a stranger
That come to beg a meal,
Underneath his napkin
Left a thousand-dollar bill.

It was in Oklahoma City,
It was on a Christmas Day,
There was a whole car load of groceries
Come with a note to say:

"Well, you say that I'm an outlaw,
You say that I'm a thief.
Here's a Christmas dinner
For the families on relief."

Yes, as through this world I've wandered
I've seen lots of funny men;
Some will rob you with a six-gun,
And some with a fountain pen.

And as through your life you travel,
Yes, as through your life you roam,
You won't never see an outlaw
Drive a family from their home.

Interesting Baggy but surely naive? The outlaws treat Joe Citizen no better in reality. There never have been any Robin Hoods- just hoods.

Dog'n, not for one moment did I intend to suggest that our local outlaws should run the coun ........ wait a minute, they bloody do, tararists and bloody wideboys.

You know what I meant, I'm sure, the line about robbing us with a fountain pen must ring somewhat true ???

To sum up, I'm not remotely interested in who does the robbing, I'm just warning that men in suits can be amongst the worst. OK?

Right then.

No offence intended whatsoever. I meant that songwriters like Guthrie can be naive about outlaws. Nice quote. Might be preferable to be robbed with a pen? Doesn't appear to be any alternative to being robbed.
If you haven't read Sinclair Lewis's "Elmer Gantry" you would enjoy it and I also recommend "Told in Gath" by Max Wright
which is based on his life here. Quite hard to get the first and even harder to get the second. Both guaranteed to make you laugh.

Cheers, as someone who has been in 8 armed robberies in my career of misery, I wasn't keen on being robbed with a six-gun. Mind you being financially raped by the chancellor over 40 plus years is no picnic either, I've no problem paying my share, I just wish the chancellors chums paid theirs.
Elmer Gantry was drunk. He was eloquently drunk, lovingly and pugnaciously drunk.
great first line, seems it is freely available on an Aussie site, I'll give it a go.

Amazon tell me they will ask the publishers to consider a kindle copy of "told in Gath"
