The Big Yin Still Alive

Post by justinr73 »

Saw him in Hammersmith last night - he was on good form although his illness is clearly starting to take its toll.

A very clever, talented and funny man.

Christ, don't do that  , with all the deaths I thought he'd packed his knapsack, cashed in his chips & gone to join the bleedin' choir celestial.

He's a belter, any time he gets a mention it's time for a Ya-chube clip

NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.

Phew, thought he was a goner too. Now that's a famous person I really would be devastated about. My all-time favourite comedian and feel privileged to have seen him live a couple of years ago.

I also had a sharp intake of breath there.

Sad to hear the news. He was my benchmark for rating comedy.

Think you need to add - Still Alive - to the title. :D

I saw Billy a couple of years ago in the Millennium Forum just before his Parkinson's was diagnosed. He was a shadow of his former self, kept losing his train of thought and I came away sad at his decline, but I think he has got more of a handle on it now.
He has set the benchmark for stand-up comedy and there aren't many in his league.

When I said benchmark, I should clarify - a really funny comic routine may hit the dizzy heights of 0.8 Connolies. A particular gag may even go to 1.0, but that's it. We will not see his like again.

He had been going off on tangents for years and I thought that was maybe part of his routine but I think I read somewhere that he had gone blank on a few occasions before the diagnosis.

I posted a similar message on another forum I frequent and nobody indicated they had assumed the worst - you NI-ers are a bloody morbid bunch!

Whilst I hope he has a while left in him yet, Billy has had a great life but may be left with one regret when it comes time to recline on his deathbed.......
