Sorry, no it's not. And it's not money either. By definition, if you have too many hospitals , you will never have enough staff to staff them. Every review of NI NHS since 2000 has said the same thing. We need fewer, centralised, specialised hospitals with outliers to deal with the rest.
As Mervn says above it needs very tough non parochial decisions, a feat which a string of NI self centred parties had shied away from . Why in a 10 department structure, was Health 8th or 9th to get picked!
Cos it was "too hard"
A bunch of incompetent nobodies, and the weaknesses of our non decision making power sharing "government" continue to shine through in the covid 19 response in Ni.
Correct

The most obvious example of this was duplication of services across the Royal and City hospitals sites. The main driving force for that was (whichever "side you were on") there was one hospital for usuns, and one for themuns.

At least significant progress has been made and continues to be made in centralising many specialisms on one site or t'other, not both.
I'm not arguing -
I'm just explaining why I'm right

Pubic Health Agency / PHE etc have been grossly underfunded and treated with contempt for a long time, because, 'It couldn't happen here.' Now it has. >flog

Which specialisms are you talking about in particular? This is happening already in many specialist areas.

What specialisms will this one hospital cover?

How many acute hospitals will there be throughout the province and what services will they provide?

Make reference to how this will impact on bed capacity?

Currently many rural hospitals such as Enniskillen are experiencing staff shortages.
Which specialisms here would you close to solve staffing shortages?

Make reference to specific staffing numbers across the region and vacant posts if possible to demonstrate how chronic understaffing is not the main problem. I am all for reconfiguring services to maximise efficiency and making best use of staff available but many changes have already been made in the last 20 years. It's easy to make pie in the sky statements like just improve transport/road infrastructure. They have been trying to build a motorway along the A5 for about 15 years.

I don't think it's as easy as you guys are stating it is. It doesn't naturally need to solving staffing issues. You might be assuming that staff will simply up sticks and move to other parts of the country. It isn't that simple.

There is the public assumption that every surgeon can perform any operation , that every operating theatre can be used 24 hours a day by every surgeon in a hospital, that every ailment can be positively identified correctly as soon as you walk or carried into A&E or ER room .
Life is not like that.
You don't necessarily have shift that many staff because staff can be trained not every nurse is a theatre nurse or a ward nurse .
My nephew a consultant was seconded to the City during the first lockdown -- he had to trained in the use of a ventilator
before hand as did others they also had to trained in the wearing of PPE .
They learnt on the job.
The fact is that an organisation like the NHS absorbs money and wastes it quickly -- not necessarily intentionally but the size and distribution of resources frequently means the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.
The truth is when they say you Practice being a doctor or a surgeon it is the truest statement in the medical profession.

There really is no guaranteed quick fix solution because the public expectation will always exceed the ability to deliver.

Two great truths.

The NHS is, by definition inefficient. It can't be anything else. And in an unprecedented situation like this, who in their right mind would expect anything else.

The more healthcare we get, the more we want. Also, sadly, the less many folk seem to take responsibility for their own health. It's part of a much bigger debate but that's for another day.

Can anybody tell me what the background graphic is supposed to represent in the Newsline Covid reports?

It's distracting to the point that I don't hear a word the journo is saying.

Some might say your easily distracted -- like many backgrounds it may represent nothing

And it's your need for meaning is the distraction . Which is what some find interesting in modern abstract art while others simply take it at face value as a load of

Classic high security bank vault / mad scientist's nuclear store, big round door at the end of a long corridor, impenetrable to anyone except the Man from Uncle, Mission Impossible team or similar.

By the way, watched the 2015 Man from Uncle film last night. Dreadful!

So the more good news on the vaccine front. The Oxford Astrozenica Covid-19 vaccination is now approved for use. Although it is more difficult to manufacture it is easier to store temperature wise. The trial results might suggest less efficacy than the pzifer/biotech and moderna mRNA vaccine but there would need to be a direct comparison trial to be more certain on which vaccine is most clinically effective. Not that this matters to the average Joe, like you or me, as all the results are good. I recommend taking which ever option is available to you.

I personally have already had my first dose of the Pzifer-Biotech Covid-19 vaccination. I thoroughly recommend it. Considering the size of the studies we can be very confident on the safety of this product. Also if you read the ingredients they are so benign compared to other drugs we put into our system.

Well said Dave. Unfortunately there's far to many stories out there of those who have already refused it or plan to. It's not even those who are vunerable it's the people who are looking after them. Idiots.

Most of us will probably be getting the Oxford one which would be my preference in any case.

Very similar in it's modus operandi to most of the other flu vaccines that have been tried and tested down the years.

I would take the other one if I had to but I feel that the risks, while still small, are probably greater - the long term effects are still unknown. I know there has been some discussion in the medical world about possible changes in the long term immune response resulting from the RNA wan.
