So ... I find it condescending.

Experts tend to use it as a 'Just give me a minute, while I work out how to explain this to you in simple terms' sort of way.

Your man Brian Cox would be the sort.
I used to see a specialist (doctor type bloke) who used it at the beginning of every sentence.

I'm not too bothered by the likes of them, because they certainly needed to dumb down their thinking in order that I might understand, but I find it annoying when it is a 'barista' explaining to me why the sugar is at the far end of the cafe.
