Ulster v Australia 1996

Post by 28' »

Bored stuck at home sick this week and scratchin around, have come across an old programme.
Ulster v Australia Saturday 16 November 1996
The team sheets make interesting reading. We had some cracking players. Still do.
Don't remember the score though far to much guinness!!! :drunken:

You are not alone in not remembering the score 28' - at least correctly.

On the UR website, the score is recorded as Ulster 31 Australia XV 39.

Going to:- http://www.ulsterrugby.com/rugby/9112.p ... ixid=54349
and selecting the Lineups Tab displays the Teamlists and scorers.

Summation of these scores would put the score at Ulster 21 Australia XV 34. There is an obvious flaw in that however as Ulster are recorded as scoring one try and 2 conversions! Thankfully there is an explanation for that which is that a penalty try was awarded to each team giving 26 - 39.

Contemporary reports all report 26 - 39 but perhaps those journos also had taken too much Guinness.

Thanks for the info Cables.
Jogs the old memory banks a bit 26-39 sounds familiar.
Either that or try another 8 pints or more of guinness :drunken :drunken:
Somehow managed to get a few Aussie signatures as well.

As did I, 28', although I did leave the ground a dejected and very confused 12 year old when David Campese refused to sign my match programme :(

Surprised to hear that Neil. Fortunate to have met the man on a couple of occasions - & found him to be an absolute gent. Didn't think he was like that. All the more disappointing to a kid.
