McIlroy on brink of Masters debut
Rory McIlroy remains on course to make his US Masters debut after he held on to 50th place in the world rankings.
The 19-year-old from Northern Ireland missed the cut at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa.
But he clung on to 50th place because Matthew Goggin lost rather than won a play-off for the Australian Open.
The world's top 50 on 22 December qualify for Augusta, and McIlroy will be looking to cement his spot at this week's South African Open.
England's Ross Fisher and Oliver Wilson, 29th and 39th in the rankings, are certain to make their debuts.

Official World Rankings:
1 Tiger Woods (USA) 12.57pts
2 Sergio Garcia (Spa) 8.32
3 Phil Mickelson (USA) 7.34
4 Padraig Harrington (Irl) 7.18
5 Vijay Singh (Fij) 6.91
6 Robert Karlsson (Swe) 5.21
7 Camilo Villegas (Col) 5.03
8 Henrik Stenson (Swe) 5.01
9 Ernie Els (Rsa) 4.83
10 Lee Westwood (Eng) 4.73
Selected others :
19 Justin Rose (Eng) 3.84
25 Ian Poulter (Eng) 3.20
29 Ross Fisher (Eng) 2.98
31 Luke Donald (Eng) 2.96
33 Graeme McDowell (NIrl) 2.86
39 Oliver Wilson (Eng) 2.64
41 Paul Casey (Eng) 2.62
50 Rory McIlroy (NIrl) 2.30
Hopefully he can play well this week in SA and claim his place in The Masters. With Harrington winning 2 majors this year and McDowell doing very well and winning the Scottish open this year things are looking up for golf in Ireland.McIlroy looks to be a talented young player who can only get better and playing in The Masters would be a great experience.

Dropped one place last week as he missed the cut with some erratic scoring. Hopefully he will have settled this week and can stay in the top 50 with a decent performance in the last tournament of the World Rankings year.

No shortage of quality golfers coming through at the moment...

From belfast telegrph website:

McIlroy rises to 39th in world rankings
'Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy is up to 39th in the world rankings after just 15 months as a professional golfer.
The Co Down teenager secured qualification for next April's US Masters after finishing tied for third place at the South African Open yesterday.
He went into the event 50th in the world and needed to maintain that position to secure a place in the field at Augusta.
McIlroy's fellow Northern Irishman Gareth Maybin narrowly missed out on victory yesterday, losing to local favourite Richard Sterne on the first play-off hole.
The result means Maybin is now 90th in the world, his first foray into the top-100.'

Add to Graeme McDowall and we are very well represented in the top 100. Its good to have a few names to look out for rather than just Clarke. For the population, we are punching well above our weight.
Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident.

BT is wrong though. Rory is actually 40th in the OGWR (Official Golf World Rankings) . One place is not exactly a big deal though - It just shows that the BT need to do their homework a bit better. The important thing is that this secures him a place in the Masters at Augusta next year.

Way to go Rory!

Delighted to see him play so well over the weekend to secure his place in the Masters and continue his rise up the rankings. If he can keep progressing he definitely has the talent to get into the top 20 in the next couple of years and eventually become a top 10 player. What he needs to do in 2009 is win a tournament early on which will give him the confidence to take on the big boys in the big tournaments.

Rory double-bogied the first two holes of his final round to leave himself a real mountain to climb. Amazing that he could turn around after that and still finish just one shot behind the winner.

Not a golfer in any shape or form, but isn't this looking good for young McIlroy?

Was sure he'd blown it in the last 3 holes, delighted that he didn't though. Hope he'll go from strength to strength and win a rake more titles now.
