crying shame that, because he was a quality player - unfortunately his form was seriously crimped by playing with the injury for the last couple of years, so unfortunately some may not remember quite how good he was when he was with the u-20s; also had a couple of big games for Ulster early on. :salut:

Absolutely terrible news, great player, he will be sorely missed. At least he has his studies to fall back on. Best of luck big man.

Damn, another good one gone much too soon.

Indeed he is the antithesis of Cliff Richard!

David helped out at the URSC tent at the Aironi H Cup game a few weeks ago - ironically with Bryn Cunningham - and whilst in very good form, it seemed clear that he would follow his erstwhile colleague into (very) premature retirement. A player with enormous potential and a good leader (who had already captained his province and was destined for further international recognition), hopefully he can rejoin his medical studies and, in due course, perhaps tread again on Ravenhill's green as a worthy successor to Drs Dave Irwin and Michael Webb as UR doc.

Best wishes David from all in the URSC.

Sad news indeed.............Will he go straight into his studies at Queens,or will he have to apply to get back on the course?

devestating news indeed. Always sad when any young player had to cut his playing days short. I hope he has a fabulous career in medicine and who knows - maybe when he's qualified he can still have a role in rugby/Ulster rugby. Good luck David and thanks for your 100% effort at Ulster.

Whilst it was always my intention to resume my studies at Queens, I never intended it to be quite so soon.
Suggests to me that a return path had previously been discussed/agreed.

A shame- especially when so young and showing talent. Best wishes for his future in medicine.

All the best to him, its a real shame to lose a player of his potential so early into his career.
Why? Why not?
