Why Boo

Post by twiglet »

Perhaps some of the supporters can enlighten me. At Scotstoun on Friday night I watched ' Ulster supporters' boo as each of the names of the Glasgow team were announced. Some of these supporters were perhaps young and intoxicated, others were not. I think it is possible to support your team without having to boo the opposition.

There was a related thread about the HEC semi against Edinburgh when there was also booing of their team announcement.

In the past there has been some attempt to defend booing on the grounds it is "ironic" or "good humoured", not real.

Of course, it is impossible to distinguish this on TV or the radio and the booing just comes across as crass.

Its not for me personally. I'd rather hear people use their energy cheering for Ulster than denigrating the opposition.

Booing is never justified during team announcements or goal kicks.

Only acceptable for instances of blatant foul play/cheating imo.

Maybe it's just a touch of our old Belfast humour as some in these parts like to say or maybe a form of endearment as others will tell you....denigration...it's what some do best.

What Merv said ... throw in a blind ref or what really boils my pash - cos a lot of the time refs miss stuff cos they're actually watching the game somewhere else ... but blind ARs ... oh they are close to being first up against the wall when the revolution comes ...

Would be nice to cheer Munster onto the pitch, got to be nice to the weaker sides! Make them feel like people care!

No reason to boo whatever. We're there to cheer on our own team. That's what rugby supporters do. Well, Ok, there may sometimes be specific occasions when it seems appropriate to boo a player or side, particularly for foul play.

How about incorrectly selected for the national team ahead of an Ulster player?

All posters are equal, but some posters are more equal than others

Those round me were shouting 'who' not boo as each player was announced but guess they sound the same on tv. It was definitely done to be humorous whether it was or not is, of course, dependent on what humour you appreciate.
