Quote from Wayne Barnes just now- "its a yellow card because there is no intent"

The inconsistency of this is exasperating

On the basis of Payne. That was a red card

That was exactly my thought when I saw it, if intent is irrelevant, you come offside and kick a player in the head, red card

It shouldn't be, but if thats the rules then thats what should happen.

Anyone watching Clermont v Perpignan?

Two players jumped for a ball. Perpignan player clearly had his eyes on the ball but was sent to the bin. Nothing wrong with the Clermont player either.

Yeah I just saw that.

The IRB need to address this. Both players jump for the ball, it was spilled, parra milked it a bit and Perpignan player got binned.
Why? Why not?

It's becoming ridiculous. The yellow card for Perpignan is beyond me
You've got to get your first tackle in early, even if it's late.

The inconsistency is infuriating. Just watched Stormers v Highlanders. Tip tackle exactly like last night and only a yellow.

IRELAND coach Joe Schmidt has warned that the red-carding of Ulster's Jared Payne in the Saracens match has changed the landscape of rugby.

Mr Schmidt was speaking at an event at NUI, Galway where he warned that the decision would now force coaches to change the advice they give to their players.

"I feel he was unjustly red-carded by the referee. I think that was a massive blow for Ulster at the time. But it has changed the landscape and one of the things I would have said to anyone chasing the ball is it's just you and the ball," he said.

"If you're chasing the ball and it's coming down. You are trying to judge the speed of descent of the ball and trying to judge how far you need to go to get to it...You don't do that by looking around at whose there. You do that by fully committing to the ball and judging the speed of the ball. The landscape has changed just a fraction," he warned.

Mr Schmidt questioned what advice coaches could now give their players in the wake of the decision.

"They've said now it's the responsibility of the player on the ground to make sure they don't bang into anybody who has gone up in the air. What do I do now? Do I just say it's you and the ball, there's a risk in that because I might get a guy red-carded. Is that good coaching?"

"Those are the challenges. It's a very small thing but very small things win very big test matches," he added.
“That made me feel very special and underlined to me that Ulster is more than a team, it is a community and a rugby family"

It's good to see International coaches like Schmidt raise this. Hopefully the IRB are listening.

Basically the Schmidt is in the you can't and won't stop collisions camp unless you change the Laws and the refs are trying to impose an impossible duty of care

I'm not quite sure what anyone expected Schmidt to say other than that.

"Kiwi defends Kiwi shocker as the Schmidt hits the fans".

I'm tending not to trust many Kiwis these days.
